Man o£ distinction on several counts, Carlos H. Baker '32 is not only well known as a Princeton professor and author; he has recently been named "Man of the Year" by Town Topics, the Princeton, N. J., weekly paper. In the article giving the reasons for nominating him for this honor, the editor writes:

"We nominate Carlos Heard Baker, 40-year-old Associate Professor of English (at Princeton) and a member of the Borough School Board, who with the publication of the first issue of the University's 'Good Reading' supplement has given still another convincing demonstration of the fact that academic life and so-called everyday living are inextricably interwoven, that academic isolationism is a thing of the past. One of the most energetic members of a long-working community, Baker, with the aid of 18 faculty reviewers, has made time for editing a 40-book supplement designed for distribution to 'busy men of affairs' as a guide to what is really worth reading. In his 13 years here Baker has come to personify a broad approach to education. Deeply interested in people and sensitive to their interests he has struck a fortunate balance between teaching and research. Classes, freshman advisory duties, responsibilities on the special humanities committee are all part of Baker's load."

In addition to articles and other books, he is the author of Shelley'sMajor Poetry, which received very favorable reviews upon its publication in 1948. Baker was awarded the M.A. degree by Harvard in 1933, by Princeton in 1938; ancl his Ph.D. by Princeton in 1939. For several years he served as Class Secretary for 1932.
