Roses for June birthdays to Chase, Kimball,Miller, Smith and Varney.
Classmates must have been greatly pleased to read in the April ALUMNI MAGAZINE the story by Herbert F. West '22 of the career and activities of Dave Storrs who has and always has had a warm spot in our hearts. To the concluding lines "We all wish him happiness, good health and prosperity for many years to come," all in '99 say Amen.
In the '99 news column last month, one of Tim Lynch's golf partners at Pinehurst was named as Fred "Channing" '00. That was a typographical error. It was Fred Jennings.
Galusha is busy as ever producing his gas producers, now being built and sold in Engand, South Africa and Australia. Four of his argest units were recently shipped to China. Phil and Mrs. Winchester spent three weeks in Florida in April.
Cush wrote, "I expect to be in Randolph next year." From his remark at the time of the 50th Reunion we thought it would be this year. Let's hope it will be soon when he and his charming Florence honor the town of Randolph and the state of Vermont with their permanent presence. We hope then to have the pleasure of seeing them oftener.
Rodney Sanborn and the Secretary attended the Annual Dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni of New York in April and enjoyed meeting contemporaries of other classes. They are getting fewer year by year.
Alvah Guy Sleeper died April 30 after a long illness. Funeral services were held May 3 in North Cambridge. The Secretary sent flowers for the class and notified several classmates in Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. An obituary article will appear in a later edition of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
After spending the winter and early spring in Sarasota, Fla., Warren and Helen Kendall returned early in May to their Washington home where they expected to remain until going, the first of June, to their summer home at Kennebunk Beach, Me.
Sam Smith, who has been living in Hanover. Mass., sold his place there and has restored a house in Pembroke, Mass., which was built in 1715. It has many features that appeal to people who like old houses and is about eight miles from Daniel Webster's old home in Marshfield. A Judge Whitman, a very intimate friend of Webster's, used to live in the house where Sam lives now and Webster used to visit him there regularly. Sam is now spending much of his time enjoying the same fireplaces that Webster knew.
Paul Osgood writes that his life is uneventful but it seems that he has enjoyment of many diversions—painting and house-repairing, fishing, blueberry and wild grape picking in season to can and use during the winter and an occasional trip to the seashore for clams.
The Secretary is glad to receive now and then a letter from Spade Heywood. In commenting on the picture of the attendants sitting around the table at the 50th Roundup, he wrote: "I don't see how you and Hawkes keep your dark hair. Montie Fuller also stands out with a large crop on top. But I don't think you all three have led the same kind of lives." Indeed we haven't. The bustling activity of Times Square is a great con- trast to the scenes where Ralph and Montie pursue their careers. Spade recalls those who roomed in Hallgarten where he lived all of five years, viz.: Asakawa, Atwood, Barney,Greenwood, Fred Walker, Collar, N. P.Brown, Earl Eastman, Foss, Dickey, H. O.French, E. A. Hyatt, Wood. He writes: "A list of '99 men, who were never in 15 Hallgarten, would be long, but a list of classmates whose rooms I never visited would be longer."
The Secretary will be at his summer home at Ogunquit, Me., all during the month of July and will be happy if any classmates or members of their families who are in that vicinity or passing through will honor him with a call. The address is 7 Wharf Lane.
If any have not previously planned to attend the informal class family gathering at the New Ocean House at Swampscott the week-end of June 16-18 and would like to be there, come and you will be well taken care of.
Happy summer vacations to all and please send news about them and other doings.
Any news of Baldwin?
