IN a simple ceremony following the meeting of the General Alumni Association, June 17, a plaque honoring the late Pat Kaney, Dartmouth gym coach, was dedicated at the south end of the upstairs gym floor. President Dickey accepted the plaque from Richard H. Morton '36, former gym team member, who headed the alumni committee which planned the memorial.
The plaque, bearing a bas-relief likeness of Pat Kaney, has been placed on the gym wall and has this inscription: "A Tribute to Patrick J. Kaney, Gym Coach and Assistant Professor of Physical Education, 1914 to 1948. His competence, understanding, enthusiasm and patience distinguished him among coaches; and his modesty, good sportsmanship and friendliness inspired the admiration and respect of all whose privilege it was to know him. Presented by His Teams—His Friends."
TRIBUTE BY PROF. MATHEWSON
Mr. Morton, who spoke briefly, was introduced by Prof. Louis C. Mathewson, close friend of Pat Kaney's, who said of the former gym teacher, "We are to leave mounted on this wall of his workshop a tablet in remembrance of what his life has meant to our lives. For Pat was a molder of more than bone and sinew. He instilled confidence and courage, builded manhood and integrity; in fact, he developed 'granite in muscle and brain and character'."
Mr. Morton's dedication remarks were as follows:
"We pause today to acknowledge a career of devoted service to Dartmouth College and to pay the deepest respect to the memory of a courageous and friendly man. Pat Kaney saw thirty-four Dartmouth classes come to Hanover.... like a father, he stood proudly by while thirty-four classes, marked by his association, were graduated and went forth from these hills. Pat lives today in the memory of these Dartmouth legions, wherever they may be. We know this, having heard many of their voices within the year. They express eternal gratitude that Pat Kaney was part of Dartmouth College. His fame lives in their hearts and lives, each made happier for having known him.
"In these minutes of dedication, we express reverent hope that the generations yet to come may somehow feel on their shoulders the helping hand of this great coach, athlete and friend. 'He did a lot more for me than I was ever able to do for his gym team'—is a simple, yet eloquent statement by one of his students. It describes the spirit and memory to which we dedicate this lasting plaque. May Pat's patient understanding, tireless effort and true devotion to his profession forever remain a challenge and an inspiration to those who carry on his teaching, and .... may his infectious smile, humble philosophy and friendly help continue to abound in the surroundings he loved."
