With the retirement from active supervision of Lebanon schools this last June, William J. English will have set at least two records in education in the state of New Hampshire. Bill is the oldest superintendent in years of service to the state and has remained in one supervisory district longer than any other superintendent—38 years in educational work and 31 as superintendent in the New Hampshire schools. Bill's term in the Lebanon "Union," 26 years, is longer than any other. The Supervisory Union No. 32 comprises Lebanon, Grantham and Plainfield. He expanded and improved courses, introduced shop work and home economics courses, training in biology, physics and chemistry, vocation courses in agriculture, courses in social science and perhaps his greatest single advance, the expansion of the machine shop course. Bill's retirement is due to ill health. Dr. Ernest W. Butterfield wrote, "The state owes you much for diligent and sensible educational leadership and service, and I hope you will long be content to remain with us in New Hampshire." In the picture with Bill is Malcolm Smith, the grandson of Paul C. Smith '14 and Leroy Porter '15. Bill's address is now 7 Chestnut St., Lebanon, N. H.

Bill will also be responsible for the management of the company's retail stores in New York and for export sales. Undoubtedly he will return from Canada to New York now and we'll see more of him and Sarah in Hanover and about New England.
