If the name heading this column seems vaguely familiar, it is because I was the life partner of your former secretary William A. Carter. Some of you are aware of this, but others may not be.

For the privilege of serving the class of 1920 I wish to thank Sherman Adams, president; Horace Dalrymple, vice president; Albert Frey, treasurer; Nathaniel Whiteside, head agent; and others who decided to place the torch in my hands until June 1985 when all members of the class, present and voting, will have the opportunity to elect a secretary of their choice. I am grateful to be serving temporarily as it has given me a sense of purpose of which I feel very much in need at this particular time.

In humble recognition of their labors I wish to pay tribute to those who preceded me as secretary of the class. According to the 1920 25th reunion yearbook, Arthur W. Stockdale was secretary at the time of the 1920 Commencement; Frank B. Morey was next in line; Richard M. Pearson followed him; Allan M.Cate took over then, as he did again later; George H. Macomber served next; WilliamA. Carter succeeded him; Burdette E. Weymouth came to Bill's rescue; and it is here that A1 Cate returned for his second term.

Your new secretary has much to live up to and to learn from the example set by these faithful and dedicated men. Their devotion to the class and to the College was un- flinching even when often faced with grave difficulties while performing their duty. So please be patient with me and help me by sending in items for this column which will make interesting and enjoyable reading. Dartmouth has been my life, too, ever since I met Bill in 1919 and especially since 1928 when as a family we came "home" to stay. I, too, owe so very much to "Dear old Dartmouth, bless her name."

June 1985 is a very important time for us all. Do give some thought to possible plans for our 65th and send your ideas on to the reunion chairman, Horace E. Dalrymple, 28 Hood Kroft Manor, Derry, NH 03038.

On September 22 a mini-reunion for the classes of '22, '21, '20, and '19 will be held at 11:00 a.m., before the Penn game, in the Tavern Room at the Hanover Inn. The price is $lO and there will be a cash bar. Reservations should be made before September 19. Send name, address, and telephone number to Sherm Adams, Pollard Road, Lincoln, NH 03251, or call 603/745-8111 (business) or 603/ 745-2289 (home).

Bill and I have always felt greatly indebted to Bud and Alice Weymouth. Bud more or less reluctantly accepted the office of secretary when he realized that Bill needed his help. You were indeed friends in our need. It has been said that the man who sees his brother's need and supplies it blesses himself as well as his brother. Shakespeare puts it this way in The Merchant of Venice: "The quality of mercy is not strain'd,/It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven/ Upon the place beneath: It is twice bless'd; /It blesses him that gives and him that takes." These are our thoughts about you, Bud, and about Alice, too.

And now the time has come to say/ Farewell, until another day or, to quote Bill, "Adios, amigos."
