Two United States Senators, the president of the DuPont Company, and the president of the Textile Workers Union of America will be among the guest speakers for the Great Issues course at Dartmouth College for the remainder of the first semester. These men and four other outside speakers will discuss various phases of the general topic "American Issues and Democratic Values."
"Individual Incentive and National Development " is the topic to be discussed by Crawford H. Greenewalt, president of the DuPont Company, on December 3. Emil Rieve, general president of the Textile Workers Union of America, will speak December 10 on "The Responsibilities of Labor in a Free Society," and on December 13 Laurence F. Whittemore (Hon. '48), president of the Brown Company, will describe "Ethics in Business Management." Leverett Saltonstall, United States Senator from Massachusetts, will speak December 17, on "The Responsibility of the Opposition in Our Government."
The first speaker after the Christmas recess will be Thurgood Marshall, special counsel of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, appeaing January 7 and speaking on "Civil Rights in America." James W. Fulbright, United States Senator from Arkansas, will discuss "Ethics in Public Life" on January 14. Henry Steele Commager, Professor of History at Columbia University, will conclude the semester with a lecture January 21 on "The Perspective of Freedom."
Three members of the Dartmouth faculty are also lecturers for Great Issues during December and January. They are: James F. Cujick, Professor of Economics, "Property vs. Human Rights"; Robert K. Carr '29, Joel Parker Professor of Law and Political Science, "Progress in Civil Rights"; and Bruce W. Knight, Professor of Economics, "The Attack on Freedom."
