In Hanover about this time the first signs of snow should be seen and talk will be turning from the past football season and turkeys to Christmas vacations, prospects for the various athletic teams about to represent the Big Green on basketball floors, hockey rinks, in swimming pools and elsewhere, and the inevitable blue books. Out here there's lots of blue, too, all very watery and quite salty. The parallel is poor, so let's forget about it and delve into the activities of our compatriots.
THE HITCHING POST
Via the grapevine it's known that Pat Dolan married Jo Yetter, his highschool sweetheart according to the report, in August. Pat's another legal eagle, at Virginia.
George Carter and Sally Ann White tied the knot in the Lancaster, N. H., All Saints Catholic Church September 29. They'll be living around Beantown where George has gone to work for Jordan Marsh.
RATTLE PRATTLE
Two new additions to the '5O family were cleverly announced recently. The first dated July 10 came from Warren and Barbara Cox who sent a small tepee-shaped card inscribed "Sending up smoke signals to say ... a little new papoose in our wigwam." W. M. C. IV weighed in at 7 pounds, 634 ounces.
Arrival the second was in Jackson Heights, N. Y. "It's a girl, Kathleen Tuck, born on August 30, weight 6 pounds, 15 ounces," said the announcement from Kathleen and GeorgePartlow. Great news, you folks, and congratulations from all of us.
GRAPEVINE REPORTS
The underground source noting Pat Do- lan's nuptials was Bud MacDonald, who wrote from Navy Loran School in San Diego last August. A 30-day leave for young D. K. appar- ently restored his morale to a high level for he was able to discuss our mutual foreign service in light terms despite earlier comments which indicated he was less than happy 8000 miles from home. But now he looks forward to his return to Nippon with relish ... looks forward anyhow. Bob Myers, he said, had been around "Dago" for a while, but he's been transferred to the East Coast. "I offered him a year's salary to swap, but he just sneered." Whereupon Bud offered his services to the local Navy football squad and has been unheard of since.
Dick Sullivan came up with a heap of tidings so entertaining we can do nought but lift a few lines direct from his letter.
"Stan Schneider dropped in to the office about a week ago and instead of going after his Ph.D. at Penn, he decided to call it a day with his Master's. Like many of us, he is now bowing thrice daily to the all powerful buck. Or at least he is looking for a job, but hasn't decided definitely what he is going to do in the foreseeable future. Bud Marvin left his job at the furniture factory in Massachusetts and is now working for some insurance company in Hartford. Jim MxCrum is still working for TWA and from what I hear he plans to take a free trip to Cuba. It looks like a small racket with this outfit for you will recall he flew for free to California in April. Cal Minor left for Haiti last week for the Texas Company. Bob Funkhouser, his roommate, still is with McCann, Erkkson and perhaps you will see some jazzy advertisements dreamed up by him.
"Do you remember my mentioning that MattCooney was teaching in Gloucester High? Well, the old fraud has done it again. He has been accepted at the University of Edinburgh and plans to leave for Scotland at the end of next summer. Had I known it was that easy, I most certainly would have dropped a line to the Sorbonne, Grenoble or Oxford, but since I am well on the way to my second million, I guess I should stick around to boost inflation."
Following greetings, Walt Lindenthal revealed the purpose of his Thal-O-Gram was to bring us up to date with the doings of said Thai and the Tuck Group in the wilds of the metro area. Besides listing his multifarious accomplishments with Hopalong Cassidy and Lone Ranger outfits for small boys at Macy's, Lindy expounded on the success of his erstwhile roomies. Sherm Clough is "inching" along the road to fabulous wealth with G. E. and Bob Wilson is allocating knuckles in an attempt to become high mogul in charge of production control and purchasing for a midWest Sylvania plant. Of the jokers meeting bi-monthly at the New York Dartmouth Club for brews, supper and a night on the town, Bill Cross (W. R. Grace & Co.) and Tom"Sven" Warner, who has yet to become the Swedish masseur the Tuck Terrors predicted he would, are roommates, as are Cliff Whiteman and Johnny Dwyer. Out in Toledo, KenEdelson rated praises for being employed by Macy's branch, Lasalle and Koch. The last news of the report claimed that the new Thai Product, "TZOOT" toothpaste was nearing the final stages of development. Watch for the big campaign in a few weeks .. . "TZOOT ... it eats away food particles (also tongue, teeth and gums) ... a wonder refresher for the morning after one of those nights."
One of our Paris correspondents has moved his station some few miles from the other side of the Atlantic to Berkeley, Calif. That would be Johnny Moulton, who hired two lawyers to read the Cal catalogue of courses, a secretary to fill in the application forms, and then stood in registration line for an hour with the idea that in a year or so a Master's degree in philosophy will be forthcoming. After such rigmarole it would take no less than a master philosopher to reconcile the hardships with the goal. In addition to his domestic tribulations, however, Moult appended word of a number of roving Indians, Earl Putnam and Bob Lindell, who were going to Science Politique, and "Red" Austin, who was in Paree in the fall. Johnny finished off his year abroad with a hitch-hike through Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Sweden, the highlight of which was the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, complete with two-liter mugs of foaming suds.
THE SERVICE SCENE
Leo Appel penned a comprehensive com- munique from that bastion of naval might, Newport, R. I. He, Jack Morton and Bill Wil-liams returned stateside via the Suez Canal in August and have been suffering the pangs of outrageous floating shore duty ever since. Leo mentioned occasional letters arriving from Pete Shaffer, "whenever he can steal a stamp from the General Foods people who are pro- tecting him from relief by employing him as a salesman."
Moving down the coast to Navy District 3 we look in on the trials and tribulations of Gene Ulrich, whose understatement of the year was "NSCS (Naval Supply Corps School) is far from difficult to take." Seems the curriculum was not unlike that of Tuck School with majors in bridge and celebrations on the slightest provocation. Bayonne's proximity to Manhattan has allowed Ulcers to make numerous safaris into that concrete jungle for periodic pow-wows with the troops, and he noted the presence of the same infamous Tuck alumni as Walt Lindenthal plus Charlie Davison, a budding accountant, Tony Poltrack,Walt Baranetsky and John Schalles. Another young officer and gentleman, Ed Tuck, was also frequenting the opium parlors with Ulc while the Wasp was being recommissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. A recent addition in the Navy's fold, Bill Frenzel, was supposed to have an LST awaiting him in San Diego. Bill said he'd located no Waves in Newport, but then again he's a newlywed.
Clark Collins returned a few vital statistics to be passed on to Cul Modisette, the perpetrator o£ that scandalous "50-50" competitor, so we will scoop Custer this once by revealing that Clark was clutched by Uncle Sam May 15. Latest address, 136 th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Municipal Field, Niagara Falls.
D. O. Brown wrote while en route, by air of course, to Lackland AFB, San Antonio. Expressing hope to be married in November, Don passed on the dope about several wandering fellow fifties. Jack Meehan is an Army corporal, in Japan since June or July. DickFrey has applied for a Navy commission, and Jack Lockyer ought to be getting his wings pretty soon as a Naval aviator out of Pensacola. Sgt. Park Taylor was in North Carolina awaiting shipment to Germany for MP duty.
That's about it for this month. Happy holi days, guys!
