Dartmouth just finished a brilliant comeback and walloped the Yales as this column is being written! To tie in with Alumni Fund news, it is most pleasing to tell you that the "Growler" (Jack Whitman) will take over the immense task as Chairman of the Alumni Fund Drive for our class. Jack, as you know, was a tower of strength with Bob Kimball's group during these past years. Jack's wife Jean has added a footnote to the acceptance letter and she pledges her support. You know the wives are a real force in many of our class tasks. Nice to have the Whitmans aboard. You'll be hearing from him next spring and you assistant agents much before then.
From Bermuda, Dick Bowser writes that this is a second honeymoon and, as if this isn't rubbing it in, he adds that his new job is with the State Street Investment Co., managing Harvard's funds. Great to hear from you "Bowse," and as your card came in covered with snow I looked with envy at the Bermuda postmark. Hope this isn't where Harvard's funds are these days. George TValley, who has been married to Jane Goode -since October, 1950, is Supervisor of Claims with Liberty Mutual in Boston. George says this last year was spent concentrating on his job around the clock and that he did see Glenn Hartranft and Bill Brindly and hopes to lamp a few of our number at the Princeton Smoker. JimMcßride tells us he is now on 1421 Mamaroneck Avenue, Mamaroneck, N. Y. He and Dorothy McCabe have been married since November 16, 1950, and his method of, supporting her is that good old system of being in business for yourself. Jim, and another "Green," Hank Childs '41, are .selling the "Vent-a-Hood" for over your stoves in the kitchen. Always a promoter, he included the sales literature in his response. Now if your cooking room has "KO" (Kitchen Odor) call Jim.
From Los Angeles, Austin Adams tells of his job in purchasing for the Maher Color and Chemical Co. Austin's been out of touch for a time due to illness, but we can expect more news from that happy land soon. StanChisholm is most informative and is the new dad of a little gal Melissa, born last January 4. Stan is seeing Fred Embree at General Electric in Bridgeport, where they both toil. Fred and Fern just had a little girl, their third child. I'll be pacing you by next April, Fred. And from the area of eternal optimism, Texas, George Rein checks in from Huntsville, where he is a commission agent for Hunble Oil Co. (Jack Whitman take note, this guy is in the oil business and should be a big spender next year.) Just in fun, George, give us some more growls from the southwest.
Report from Toledo! It was my good fortune to have a chance to get some first-hand information from Jack Witte and Tim Hewlitt on a recent trip to the home of the drinking glass. Tim told me that the pressure is increasing on him at Corning Fiberglas Inc. He is doing some very elaborate cost accounting, but he still has time to come up with a formula to make the elusive "million," briefly, go southwest, young man, and sell the high profit item. A few minutes after talking to Tim, I got hold of Jack Witte and we went on down to the Toledo Club for a most enjoyable evening. Jack is back in the Navy as a Supply officer up at Newport, R. I. He has been very active with the Navy Reserve, but it is too bad to shove off now, because his Moving and Storage business was really beginning to click. Bob Bogart was not at home. Jack says he travels a great deal for a wholesale appliance business. Neither could I reach Mack Grove. Next time I'll try to call sooner so we can all gather somewhere for some "foams."
Harvard seems to keep claiming our boys. Dune Gibson has just been appointed Assistant in the Financial Aid Center there. He is also a freshman adviser (tell them to leave that place). Bob Kimball got out a very convincing "dues" letter. By the way, he and Jackie just had a new little girl, Susan, born October 2, 1951. The Smith boys, Dan Smith and Rob Smith, are doing their share in the education field. Dan is a member of the faculty at Monsan Academy. Rob is head of the social studies department at New Hampton and is currently on a leave of absence to complete his thesis for a Ph.D. at Columbia University Graduate School of Political Science. "Reese" McGrath and his wife were lucky enough to spend a couple of days at the Hanover Inn last month.
New Squaw squawks follow. Bob Bensing was married to Billie Schwartz September 16 at Portland, Ind. After a Mexican honeymoon, they will live in Chicago. AI Clain married Elizabeth Lee Johnson in Ridgewood, N. J. Jim O'Neil was married to Pat Weiske in Westport, Conn., October 13. Jim was in Venezuela with the Basic Economy Corporation under Nelson Rockefeller. Pat and Jim will now live in New Orleans. And in Dayton, 0., Dick Scharrer and Jean Gordon said "I do" October 6. Tom Gillaugh was an usher. Dick is a hustling attorney in "Cash Register Town." (I still have a tentative lunch with this next guy.) Nort Virgien was married to Blanche Caulfield in Ridgewood, N. J., at an evening ceremony October 5. Blanche and Nort will live in Levittown after the wedding trip, which afforded them several days at the Hanover Inn.
Till next time, as the plumber says, "go easy on the elbow."
