We had a fine letter from Jim Chandler who is planning to be in Hanover the weekend of February 16 and 17 to attend Freshman Father's weekend with his son Jay. Jim also has an older son, Bill, who is a junior at M.I.T. Jim is still busily engaged as real estate editor for The Cleveland Press. He also edits the Realty Editor, a paper gotten out by the National Association of real estate editors. Jim sent us a copy of the December issue which covered a convention of that association held in Miami Beach. The pictures show that Jim is quite active and prominent in that association and they also show that his section in The Cleveland Press was awarded a prize for the best real estate page published in color. The Cleveland Press has recently published Jim's first book, which is a compilation of home maintenance hints and suggestions from his Saturday column entitled Homemaker's Center.
James B. Willing, 16 Ledyard Rd., Winchester, Mass., has been elected Vice President and Chairman of the Meetings Committee and a member of the Executive Committee for the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants, according to an announcement by Richard S. Chamberlain, president of that organization.
In addition to his activity in the Massachusetts Society, which he has served as Secretary, Auditor and Executive Committee member, Jay is also a member of the American Institute of Accountants, and the Boston Chapter, National Association of Cost Accountants. He has long been interested in civic affairs and is currently treasurer of the Winchester Girl Scouts Building Fund and is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Winchester Council, Girl Scouts.
We note from the local papers that Jay is also one of the star curlers on the Winchester Country Club curling team.
The busy Worcester barrister, Paul O'Connell, has had another activity added to his already heavy schedule. He has been elected to the Board of Governors of the Worcester County Music Association, and a recent issue of the Worcester Telegram shows his picture with other governors discussing plans for the 92nd Worcester Music Festival.
From Editor and Publisher of December 30 we get the following:
"Appointment of William C. Munnecke as business manager of the Chicago Sun-Times, effective Jan. 1, was announced this week by Marshall Field, Jr., editor and publisher.
"Mr. Munnecke comes to the Sun-Times with a varied background in commerce, advertising, education and personnel work dating back to 1927. From 1933 to 1944, he was associated with Marshall Field & Co., where he became vice president and general operating manager of the retail division.
"Since World War 11, when he was responsible for personnel, labor negotiations and other phases of atomic energy development at the University of Chicago, Argonne Forest Laboratory and at Oak Ridge, Tenn., he has served as vice president in charge of business affairs at the University of Chicago. In recent years, he has been administrative vice president of Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., and as president of the Great Books Foundation."
Insurance trade journals early in December carried the interesting and important news that Marshall Cleaves has been elected Vice President in charge of underwriting of the Home Life Insurance Company of New York. Marshall joined the Home Life in 1929 in the Department of Issue. In 1936 he was appointed as underwriter supervisor and in 1940 was made Assistant Secretary. Since 1941 he has been Underwriting Secretary. We have the pleasure of seeing Marshall each year at meetings of the Home Office Life Underwriters Association and know he is doing an excellent job.
Granville Libby of San Francisco recently married Dr. Vener Kelsen of Beverly Hills, Calif. Granville is now assistant marine secretary of Fireman's Fund Insurance Company in San Francisco.
David H. Merriam has been elected trust officer of the Palmer National Bank in Palmer, Mass. Dave worked for the Trust Department of the First National Bank and the Old Colony Trust Company of Boston for about ten years after graduation. He secured a law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1933 and was admitted to the bar. He left Boston to become trust officer of the Southbridge National Bank where he remained for some twelve years. Dave has had wide experience in trust work, tax problems and investments, and has been active in community affairs.
Visitors to the Inn in January included Lee Greenebaum from New York, Steve Osborti of St. Paul, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bartlett of Dedham.
As of February 1 we received an announcement of the formation of William S. Prescott and Co. to deal in investment securities. Bill's new company has offices at 201 Devonshire St., Boston, and will specialize in mutual funds, profit sharing trusts and retirement planning. Sharing office space with Bill at this address is Philip Fowler, President of the Tiger Oil Company.
Brad Stone has moved from Havana, Cuba, to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he is managing director of General Motors, Argentina, S. A.
Lee Stinkard is now living in Whittier, Calif., where he owns and operates a retail store. Lee is married and has one son, Howard, 18.
Bill St. Amant and his wife Susan visited here in the East late in January. They called on your scribe and family at "Headacres" for a short visit one Saturday afternoon. Bill looks fine and we were extremely happy to see him.
Charlie Allen is still running the Charles G. Allen Co., manufacturers of machine tools in Barre, Mass. Charlie and his wife have two children, Charles G. IV., who is an undergraduate at Dartmouth, and a daughter, Gladys Jean, 13.
Manny Benson lives in Philadelphia where he is chief of the Division of Education at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
I recently had a nice letter from RoyBlanchard and learned that he is now working with the Dartmouth Cooperative as a consultant on skiing equipment. We understand that he was the designer of the latest Dartmouth safety ski binding.
Led Berry owns and operates the Merrymeeting farm in Bowdoinham, Me. He and his wife Priscilla have three youngsters, Diana, 12, David Ledley 11, and Bruce 9.
Bob Bliss is still busy as co-publisher of the Janesbille (Wisconsin) Gazette and manager of their affiliated radio station. Bob and his wife Carolyn have three children, Cynthia 18, Crandell 17 and Barbara 14.
Frank Brown is resident manager of the Niagara Hudson Power Company in Batavia, N. Y. Brownie and his wife Catherine have two daughters, Marilyn age 20 and Joan 18.
Jock Davis is still running his extensive fruit orchards in Sterling Junction, Mass. He is also very active in the production and marketing of Minute Maid frozen apple conentrate. If you haven't tried it, we can recommend it highly. According to Jock his product has more vitamin content than orange juice and we understand that it is high in iron content and is consequently being used considerably at one of the local children's hospitals.
