F. Charles Avery '88, who observed his 90th birthday April 14, still believes that helping young people to go to college is one of the most important objectives a person can interest himself in. He himself worked his way through college and for years afterwards worked to help his parents pay off the mortgage on their home. He estimates that since he started on his teaching career, which began in Vermont, and continued over a 27-year period in Stamford, Conn., former students of his and their children have attended 96 colleges through the aid he has been able to secure for them. In many cases he collected amounts equal to three and four times his own salary for students seeking college training. In other instances he secured scholarships for them.
First a teacher, and then a principal in the Stamford High School, Mr. Avery upon his retirement, learned the craft of woodworking, and became so skillful that he built several grandfather clocks. But his chief interest is still in young people and their hopes for a college education.
