CHESTER HUME FORSYTH '39h, Professor of Mathematics, ended his Dartmouth teaching career of 35 years when he retired at the end of the academic year in June. The mathematics of finance, insurance and business statistics has been the field in which Professor Forsyth has taught advanced courses. He has written four books in his specialty and is also the author of more than sixty articles on mathematical statistics and analysis.
A native of Indiana, Professor Forsyth took his A.B. degree at Butler in 1906, his M.A. at Illinois in 1910, and his Ph.D. at Michigan in 1915. During this period he taught at Illinois and Michigan and was instructor at Eureka College for one year before joining the Dartmouth faculty in 1916. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1918 and became a full Professor in '939, at which time Dartmouth awarded him the honorary faculty degree of Master of Arts.
Professor Forsyth in retirement will be able to give closer attention to the game of golf, of which he is one of Hanover's greatest devotees. In years past he was a constant traveller and conducted several touring parties to Europe.
