Congratulations to all the members of Howie Stockwell's Alumni Fund Staff for the outstanding job they accomplished in the '52 Alumni Fund Drive. I won't go into detail on the results as you have all received the Sentry. Congratulations again to Howie and the gang. You've all done a wonderful job.
Received a very interesting letter from Boband Anita Scott telling of the breath-taking beauty of their five-week trip to the West Coast and up through Oregon and Washington to Lake Louise and Banff Springs. Quote from Bob's letter regarding his birthplace in Pueblo, Colo.: "We stopped at Pueblo to see my birthplace and old home. They had changed all the addresses from block numbers to street names, and it was not until I visited the City Engineer's Office and got out the old maps that I found my old home. Imagine my chagrin to find that good old #85 Block L was now 168 Harvard Avenue."
Bill Eaton has some news to report. He and Mott Brown had a very enjoyable visit with Sandy Lynch, talked with Bill Sewall in Akron by phone and discovered that Bill had a visitor, none other than Mose Hutchins. Bill is looking forward to the reunion. I hope many of the '17ers are making plans to attend same.
Heard via Mott Brown that Sunny Sanborn is quite a fancier of gladiolus. His hobby, other than raising these beautiful flowers, is also taking pictures of the colors and formations of the gladioli. He has had write-ups in many papers.
A short note from Phil Evans tells of his visit with two classmates, namely Duke Howe and Al Edgerton, who are hale and hearty and doing fine community work. Phil and Jo's son Philip is a Naval Officer in Boston Navy Yard as a Mechanical Engineer. Their daughter lives in Detroit, comes East with her family in the summer and a family reunion is held in Harwichport, Cape Cod.
Ev Robie and Harold Walker sent in news clippings regarding Ping Doty's robbery in Swampscott. Apparently in our old age we still can read, if nothing else. We've received 12 news items on the same subject.
Ev wrote that his grandson Cricket is in the Beverly Hospital suffering from a compound fracture of the leg and knee. He was run over by an oil truck and not a tear has been shed from this game little five-year-old. Hope he is coming along and that he will not be confined too long in the hospital.
A news clipping from the Montclair Times:"Gilbert N. Swett has Lead Role Dramatic Club to Present Second Threshold Next Week." Seems only yesterday that Gil was Director of Dramatics.
A recent honor for Dr. "Mike" Donehue: he was sworn in as an honorary police surgeon. (From Moore Mack Nexus - Summer '52.)
Ken Hill forwarded the following item from the Hingham (Mass.) Weekly Journal: "Mr.and Mrs. Roger P. Stone, formerly of Main Street, have purchased a house on Whitcomb Avenue, South Hingham, and have taken occupancy of same."
From the Boston Herald, August 6, 1952: "Mr. and Mrs. John Farwell Anderson Davis of Hingham announce the engagement of their daughter Mary to Mr. Houghton Carr Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Houghton Carr, also of Hingham." (Thanks Sam for sending in this item.)
Quote from the Manchester Union Leader, dated July 19: "John Guay's Filing. Claims Lebanon Mill Hand Is Registered Republican. Guay Issues Reply That He's Been a 'Democrat Practically all My Life'; Challenges Cotton To Vote Battle." It's nice to know John is in the land of the living. How about more news, John?
Don Brooks sent in the Class Treasurer'sReport and thought it may be of interest toknow that we have $1,972.88 surplus as ofAugust 1, 1952.
A sad note from Forrie Emery on the recentdeath of our classmate Roger Merrill.
"I regret to inform the class of the passing of Roger Merrill on July 16 at Baker Memorial Hospital in Boston.
"Roger was a furniture dealer and did an interior decorating contracting business. Ruth will continue the business operated from 125 Newbury Street, Boston.
"Gyp Green and I had known Roger from high school days, so we felt his death keenly. Roger's dry humor was always a delight to his friends.
"This is the first letter I've sent in, so in passing I might casually allude to a three-year-old granddaughter Lisa and twin grandsons, Geoffrey and James Hills, aged 2 years. Really they are not half bad. They were backing Taft, as they live m Cleveland, but will soon come out openly for Ike."
