THE GEOLOGY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, PART I — SURFICIAL GEOLOGY
November 1952 E. D. Elston

ByJames Walter Goldthwait, Lawrence Goldthwait '36, and Richard Parker Goldthwait '33. Concord, N. H.: New Hampshire State Planning & Development Commission. 83 pp.

In 1925 the New Hampshire Academy of Science published a somewhat limited edition of The Geology of New Hampshire by Prof. James Walter Goldthwait. Scientific in character and written in language which the layman could understand, that publication soon became unavailable and for many years there has been need of either a new edition or a revision of the old edition.

The present publication is a complete revision based upon the general character of the earlier publication, but with the addition of new discoveries and ideas now prevailing because of such discoveries. The illustrations are excellent and almost all of them are new. A very short section dealing with sub-surface water has been added and despite its brevity this section should be of interest to those who may contemplate the drilling of an artesian well.

Best o£ all is the fact that like the earlier publication, it is written so that by careful reading it may be understood by persons who have not had special training in geology. In this respect it is rather unique and follows definitely the ideas of the late Professor Gold- thwait who felt that too many scientific publications were so designed and written as to be above the heads of people who had not had training in particular fields of science.

The authors are to be congratulated on the production of a work which should be of much interest to the trained geologist and also to the general public.
