Our alliterative efforts in the last issue were badly mangled by the typesetter. Therefore, if anyone who is interested will substitute the word "type" for "keep" in the third line he will find that the words beginning with the letter "T" are consistent and also that the line makes a little more sense. However, since none of it made a tremendous amount of sense in the first place, I can sympathize with the typesetter and, incidentally, with you, in the event that none of you understood what it was all about. Be that as it may, we start off this month with a class secretary's dream, two letters with lots of information about the people who wrote 'em and more about the people they've seen. So here goes.
The first is from Fred Raymond, recently return to Proctor, Vt. from the U.S. Navy:
"A glimpse at the latest issue of the ALUMNIMAGAZINE reminds me that I should bring you up to date about myself. Well....
"Our long-armed Uncle let me go last May, after a couple years in the Pacific Fleet on the destroyer Epperson. Of course I was glad to get out but the experience hadn't been too bad since we were home-ported in Pearl Harbor and I had come to really like Hawaii. Not that that's very difficult.
"Just before leaving I had the honor of marrying Bette Shackelford, who had been working for United Airlines there. Timed as it was, it gave us the chance to have a 10,000-mile honeymoon. Bette has never seen a New England winter and I am busily telling her that those stories are greatly exaggerated. The class was represented at the wedding by Fitz Donnell, who has adopted Hawaii as his home and, from appearances, finds it very agreeable. We got a lucky break in being able to ship the car ahead so that it was waiting for us in San Francisco, none the worse except for a couple of dents made by the slings when it was hoisted aboard.
"Dave Smith came to see us for a few minutes in S. F. before hurrying off to see that somebody got elected to something-or-other. He seemed to be a kev man in the situation. In Los Angeles we had lunch with Rudy Pacht who was knee-deep in his law work involving, among others, a well-known lady by the name of Bergman. After zig-zagging through the West and visiting such widely scattered points as Sun Vallev and Anson, Tex., where my mother lives, we headed North again to get out of the and spend an evening with the BobbChaneys in Minneapolis. From there we went on to Duiuth where we spent a couple of days with the Dud Russells and had a short sail in the faithful Siesta on Lake Superior. We eventually got back to Proctor and I returned to work for the Vermont Marble Company.
"We've been over to both the games in Hanover and enjoyed the post-game festivities at the SAE house. I know how they love to have the alumni drop in, but they've been very good about hiding their feelings. We saw the Ben Harrimans last night coming out of the Inn as we were going in for supper. This covers the news from Proctor with best wishes to all."
So, with many thanks to Fred, we turn now to a letter from Dick Hurd, recently returned by the U.S. Air Force from Alaska to Texas:
"Thanks so much for your letter. I was promoted to Lt. Colonel for one-and-a-half months without knowing it as I was en route from Alaska by ship and then went into the mountains of New Mexico for leave. My wife's people have a ranch in the Moggolon (pronounced "Muggion") Mountains which is 90 miles from Silver City. The nearest telephone is 25 miles away and you get newspapers one to two days late. In short it's remote. When I got to Bergstrom Air Base in mid-July the orders were awaiting me.
"While in San Francisco I had a few visits with Dave Smith. (Sounds like Dave is official class greeter for the West Coast Ed.) Evelyn and I had dinner at his home in Berkeley a most lovely dinner in as beautiful a home as I have had the pleasure to enter. Dave looks as though he had just strolled off the campus at Hanover and is shouldering his civic responsibilities in excellent fashion. ...
"I bought a jeep (military type) in Oakland and drove it to New Mexico. Yes I got mighty sore driving it. But they can use it to good advantage on the ranch. Had the surprise of my life when I bumped into Tahoe and Link Washburn in a Fairbanks night club last summer (1951). He was in the area on scientific work."
Dick adds that he hopes to get East in the near future and visit a few more people he hasn't seen in a long time. Just give us a day or two advance notice, son, and we'll be ready.
The station manager of the Hawaiian Broadcasting System, Ltd., in Honolulu, Mr.Fitz Donnell, sends us the following announcement:
It is with pleasure that I advise you of my decision to return to the field of merchandising. "My past seven years in radio have been both happy and productive, but an offer made by the Ault Supply Company presents such a challenge that it is impossible for me to refuse it. I have, therefore, resigned my position as station manager of KGMB and will join Ault Supply Company on November 1. <« a 1. . .1 • . J• 1. -L.-I.~_ • TT ::
"Ault is exclusive distributor in Hawaii for such important products as Kleenex, Kotex, AlkaSeltzer, Mennen's, Breck, Vicks, Murine, Gem Blades and Whitman's candies. He has important plans and I look forward to the future with great anticipation."
Fitz signs off with a guarantee to stop in New York for a visit on his next trip. Incidentally, Fitz doesn't sound like the above normally. This letter was a form job sent out to all the people he did radio business with including me. The sign-off was in his own hand writing, however.
We went up to West Point to see the Army game and, and although the game itself was disappointing, we did enjoy a beautiful fall afternoon and saw quite a few people, among them: Bob Maida, Paul Hilli, Bob Naramore,Greg Karch, Jim Higgins, Art Fisher, ArnoldWash ton, Bob Ferry, Tom Lane and Mac McCarty. Mac, by the way, enjoyed more than the afternoon at West Point. As a member of the New York Society of Military and Naval Officers of World Wars, he and Nell went up the night before for a dinner and dance Friday evening. On Saturday morning they were taken on a tour of the Academy, Mac covering such things as jet engines and lunch with the cadets in the mess hall before the game, Nell covering the kitchens and other items of interest to wives with lunch at the Officers Club. (Sounds like Nell got the better end of the eating.) After the game they gathered at the Superintendent's Home, all of which made the McCartys more Army than Dartmouth.
Mac also reports receiving a post card from Bob Sellmer whose cross-country vacation tour is completed by now. The post card was purchased in Sellmer, Tenn., purely by coincidence, and mailed from Denver, Colo., purely through procrastination.
A note from Lorry Siegener which accompanied his check for class dues to Johnny Wallace: "Back home after four months in Europe. Confined this trip to the southern port. Shared a villa with friends from San Francisco for a month at Cap d'Antibes then motored through Spain for a month, then St. Moritz and Florence. Lovely cruise on Italian Line coming and going. Now back to work and good to be home. Don't forget to stop in if you hit the Florida coast this winter." Sig, you may recall, is a Commander in the Navy and lives at City Point, Brevard County, Fla. Can't say we haven't done our best to get him some visitors this winter.
A recent visitor to this country was BillHands and wife, up on a trip from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Bill works for Atlas Supply Company. They managed to spend the night of October to in the Hanover Inn. The Phil Hemphills were also in Hanover over the same weekend and one week later Dr. andMrs. Jerry Davis put in an appearance.
Well, my friends, we've been asked to keep this column short to allow space for the list of Alumni Fund Contributors which appears below. Hope you find your name in it. Meanwhile, hope you all have a very wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you again in 1953.
