We herewith quote from a letter from Li.Col. Larry Lougee, who, with his wife and mother-in-law, is enjoying the pale Alaskan sunlight at Circle on the Yukon River, the farthest north spot that can be reached by car on the North American Continent, and 55 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Larry says right at this spot there used to be a tent city of 12,000 people back in the gold rush days of '98 and '99. Today about 50 or 60 Indians comprise the inhabitants. Larry goes on to say that he won't be able to attend the '29 Executive Committee Meeting in New York on November 21 because of his duties as Judge Advocate, U. S. Army Headquarters at Anchorage. Larry continues:

"The children are having a wonderful time here. They have seen our car race a bull moose for a mile along the highway, have pulled in red snapper and cod down at Resurrection Bay near Seward and have fished for salmon and trout in the neighboring streams. Right now our deep freeze has in it bear and moose meat, wild geese and ducks, several varieties of salmon, rainbow and greyling trout just in case a '29er stops in unexpectedly for a meal. There is a lot of talk about making Alaska a State, but for my money this huge area should remain a Federal Territory for a time to come. There are a lot of 'king makers here who would stand to advance politically or as powers behind the throne if it did become a State, but I can think of nothing that would hurt Alaska more at the present time than to become a State. This huge area is kept going almost exclusively by federal funds. The roads, the railroad, the telephone lines in fact most everything is a federal investment. I wish a few sound thinkers in Congress would come here personally and appraise the situation —it might change their attitude as to what is best for Alaska's future. Today the greatest asset the Territory has is its scenery, its hunting and fishing. And there is scenery here that cannot be topped anywhere."

Bill Irwin from Cleveland, O.:

"Beginning the first of this year I started a new company which is manufacturing aluminum residential and commercial greenhouses. At about the time our raw material arrived, Signa and I took off for Europe spending six weeks driving through Spain, Italy, Germany and various other countries covering 5500 miles and meeting some very lovely and interesting people. Incidentally, I saw one person from home whom I knew, Nelson Rockefeller, whom I met at the Palace in Escorial.

"Since returning I have been busy due to the apparent success of the new aluminum greenhouse business which has so far exceeded our expectations. All of this is in addition to heading up Ohio Pipe and Supply Company which I am very happy to say has had its greatest growth in the past ten years. I am also interested in a company which offers services to the oil and gas well industry in the major fields in the western states. These interests detract too much from the time that I like to spend with the family.

"Our eldest daughter, Jane, is in her second year at Bradford Junior College. Judy is a Junior in Bay High School and Jim is in the sixth grade and so far is of a much quieter and more stable disposition and temper than his father. We are looking forward to a visit from Lew and Jerry Clarke from Waukegan and hope to get in a little sailing together. I believe his boat and the one I have are similar in that they are auxiliaries and we both spend as much time on them as possible."

Jack Irving's not complaining, but, as he says,

"The past few years seem to have been nothing but packing up furniture, etc., and then unpacking in a new place including Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincinnati, New Orleans and now Buffalo again, to say nothing of various 'details' for short periods at various other cities. In New Orleans, I packed twice within six weeks. Who said 'Join the Navy and See the World!' Our two kids have taken it in fine style so far, but like us grown-ups, I sense a desire by this time to have some roots some place but as long as I remain a bureaucrat, I'm afraid that is not to be. Except for that factor, it has been most interesting to live in different parts of our country and to have close contact with the various points of view particularly when they are as different as the typically northern attitudes found in Buffalo and Cleveland as contrasted with the deep South of New Orleans and Mobile. My present job with the National Labor Relations Board as well as the present status of my family was reported in the October issue of your class notes. I might add that if anyone located in upstate New York has any problems related to the Taft-Hartley Act that they would like to talk over, I'd be only too glad to try and help them!"

Freddy Ingram's company is now well into its second half century of continuous manufacturing activity, now producing porcelain enameled steel products for a wide variety of uses including kitchen equipment, advertising material and numerous other specialties. Reverend Bill Ivey is now attached to the Veterans Administration at Wood, Wis.

Dud Orr has returned from a month in Europe on an assignment for Brenville Clark under a Ford Foundation grant for research on his world peace and disarmament plan.

It is with deep regret that we report the death of Herbert O. Morse on September 29, 1952. An obituary appears in the In Memoriam section of the MAGAZINE.
