THE College, as residuary beneficiary, has received the sum of $26,201.50 from the estate of the late Julia A. Hidden, of Cambridge, Mass. The bequest is to be used as a scholarship endowment fund in memory of the Rev. Samuel Hidden, Dartmouth 1791, of Tamworth, N. H., who was the donor's great-grandfather. The will states that the fund is to be directed toward "the assistance and encouragement of students at Dartmouth College who show character and promise," with preference to be shown applicants from Tamworth.
The Rev. Samuel Hidden was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received the M.A. degree from Dartmouth. In the words of his great-granddaughter's will, "In 1792 he was ordained Minister in the then wilderness of Tamworth,N. H., the ceremony taking place on top of a giant boulder now known as the 'Ordination Rock,' on which stands today a marble shaft commemorating the event, the use of the Rock being due to the fact that there was then no church building in that part of the country. A hardy and beneficent pioneer, he ministered generously during fortyfive years to the scattered inhabitants of Tamworth and its half-dozen neighboring towns, a father to them all."
