Trustee Nominee

AT THE FEBRUARY MEETING of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, Charles J. Zimmerman '23 of Hartford, Conn., was nominated for election to a first term of five years as Alumni Trustee of the College. He would succeed Nelson A. Rockefeller '30 who completes his second full term on the Dartmouth Board on June 30 and is not eligible for reelection.

As the Alumni Council nominee, Mr. Zimmerman's name will go to the Trustees for election at their meeting in June unless other nominations are submitted as described below. This nomination is made by the Council acting in behalf of the alumni body.

The nominee has achieved outstanding distinction in the field of insurance since graduating from the College in 1923 and from Tuck School in 1924. Formerly general agent for Connecticut Mutual in New Jersey and Chicago, he is now Managing Director of the Life Insurance Agency Management Association with headquarters in Hartford. He has lectured and taught in his field at several colleges, including the Tuck School, and is the author of many published articles. Last September he was given the John Newton Russell award which is the highest honor in the insurance field.

During the war Mr. Zimmerman served with the Navy, ending this distinctive phase of his career in 1946 as Captain with several area ribbons and a special commendation from the Secretary of the Navy.

He has long been active in Dartmouth affairs. As a member of the Alumni Council he was chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee in 1950 and 1951 when the achievements were, respectively, $415,000 and $577,000. He is also a member of the Dartmouth Development Council and was named among the first members of the Board of Overseers of Tuck School.

In presenting his name to the Alumni Council, the Nominating Committee reported: "We feel that at this time, in view of his achievements and talents, and the critical importance of the College's development program, that Mr. Zimmerman would be a particularly strong addition to the Board of Trustees."

Nominating Procedure

According to the constitutional provisions of the Alumni Association, the responsibility for nominating Alumni Trustees rests with the Alumni Council. Provision is made, however, for further nominations by alumni at large. The section of the constitution dealing with this feature is as follows:

"Said secretary shall also give notice, not less than four months before Commencement, and by publication in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, that the Council will nominate Alumni Trustee or Trustees to take office on the first Monday after Commencement.

"Within two months after such publication in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE any one hundred alumni qualified to vote for the Council of Alumni may file with the said secretary a petition over their own signatures for the nomination of a qualified alumnus for the office of Alumni Trustee. Said secretary shall, as soon as practicable after expiry of the period for nomination by petition, send to each alumnus qualified to vote, an official ballot containing the name of the alumnus nominated by the Council for the office of Trustee and the name or names of candidates nominated by petition, as aforesaid. No voting by proxy shall be allowed in voting for Alumni Trustees, and the polls shall close on June 10 before Commencement.

"If no candidates are nominated by petition as above set forth, no voting for Trustees shall take place, and the alumnus nominated by the Council shall be the candidate of the alumni for the office of Trustee."
