Since taking over from Don Stillman as keeper of this monthly column, I have received but two snapshots for use with the notes. And these, natch, came from wives and sisters. Summer is a'comin' in and there ought to be lots of interesting photos to send along to me. How about thinking of me next time you get a batch of shots back from the corner photo shop?
On March 7 Bill Danforth was among the '4ls present at the New York Dartmouth Club for lunch (generally consists of five bottles of beer and a cheese sandwich). Bill is in the East representing his firm which makes and sells Danforth Anchors—the right anchor for any vessel afloat from the rowboat at the local bait shop to the Queen Mary. Bill's home state is California and he says that Bob White has joined the many '4ls in the Palo Alto area. Seems Bob is in the life insurance business out there. Others out there include John Tate, Bill Clark, Nick Carter and BillMiller. One day when Bill Danforth was flying East on an Eastern Airlines plane he noticed that the name of the co-pilot was R. A.Shedden. On the speculation that it was DickShedden, he sent a note forward. Dick came back and the rest of the trip was spent swapping yarns about classmates and Dartmouth.
How many noticed the picture of PeteGlenn in a recent issue of Life Magazine exhibiting a dog at the big show at Madison Square Garden? (Man, this column is just full of news this month, eh lads?)
From the briny deep comes the saga of Howie Wilson, 2nd Officer aboard the GeneralHershey. Howie is a civilian, not a member of the Merchant Marine, but spends three weeks out of every four on the high seas. He's in charge of navigation on his ship and makes the run between New York and Bremerhaven, Germany. Howie says his assignment aboard the Naval Transport is just what he wants and intends to make the sea his career.
If you run into Dave McKinney at any time, just remember that that's not a hearing aid he's got in his pocket nor is it a Dick Tracy two-way wrist radio. It's a radio on which he receives calls from the telephone answering service in his office. Dave is in the Printing and Sales Promotion business and is in the field so much that he checks in with his office only when he's notified by radio. First we knew about it was when Red O'Connor, the legal eagle, called Dave and the operator said "One moment please I'll try to get him on the radio."
At the reunion last June, I plucked a handsome tie-clasp in the shape of an airplane propeller from the grab bag. Now a letter from Dana. Chase who put the now-treasured memento into the scramble:
"At Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Hartford I'm a vibration engineer in the Installation Engineering Department. It's the kind of a job that can be fascinating (e.g. field trips to Miami and Frisco) or dull (e.g. analyzing hundreds of feet of oscillograph record). Unfortunately I've met no Dartmouth men on these trips. At the more populated haunts of the Big Green such as N. Y., Phil., Wash., or Chi I spend only a few minutes between flights.
"Since the war the Dutch Cottons, Dick Hills and Chases have made annual affairs of the Harvard and Yale football games. This year Bunny and I missed the Harvard game. We did make the Yale game, enjoying a weekend par excellence with the Hills and Cottons at the Cottons' new modern home in Watertown, Conn. We are expecting a Leap Year daughter (did she arrive?) to round out a brood of three including Dana Jr., 8, and Christopher, 3. Every spring Ray Sea bury and I expend our energies on the tennis court and then spend the balance of the year renewing them in the usual way."
Earlier this year the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance awarded one o£ its highly honored gold keys to Gus Broberg for distinguished contributions to sports in this state. Nearly 500 prominent persons from the world of sports were on hand at New Haven to fill the Hotel Taft ballroom and cheer the 1952 recipients of the award. (Jus, as you may know, is an attorney at Palm Beach, Fla. Gus must be a Judge too and as proof I offer thisquotation from a column (no by-line when itarrived) which appeared in the HartfordTimes: (Thanx to Doc Spillane)
" 'Judge Broberg is on the bench today,' I was told as I walked in the Palm Beach Municipal Court.
"This didn't mean a thing to me until I was within the courtroom and looking up at the bench and happy I was an observer and not an accused, I found Judge Broberg was Gus Broberg, Connecticut native and star athlete in high school and in bright college years,"
News from the Foreign Department
Steve Winship writes from 17 Rue duCirque, Paris 8, France:
"I left the Herald-Tribune at the end of '51, having arranged a combination of newspaper and magazine work in Europe, and moved to Paris in January. There are of course, a great number of correspondents of varying description here and my particular pitch is the roving basis in which I operate. I base in Paris, but have begun to travel all over the map, having reached England, Ireland, Germany and Austria as well as other parts of France, and will visit all of West Europe and North Africa before Labor Day. I will be over for at least two years, with a return after Labor Day and every six to eight months thereafter to attend to the editorial fences. It is difficult to say anything about matters here in a note of this nature but my feeling so far this tour is that these people are our friends and should be treated and regarded as such; criticism, yes, but in friendly fashion and not just shouting or bludgeoning. These people are slow in many ways by nature but they realize the stakes and no amount of shouts or bludgeons will bring results; and they are somewhat different, but then, all friends are. Best regards to all. No skiing this year but next year 'Ski Heil' or better yet 'Beware Below.' "
Thanks, Steve, and while in Paris you might look up Bob Frothingham at 3 Rue St. Georges, who works in the Overseas Division of General Motors (France). Why not get together, boys, and leave one on the end of the quai for me?
That's all for now, gentlemen, but I shall return.
