THE COLLEGE

The North Country earns its spring by waiting for it. The natives, with experience behind them, know that spring will get here and that it will be worth waiting for when it comes; but Dartmouth students in their impetuous way want things to happen fast. If balmy weather won't come to them, they'll go to it; and a good two weeks in advance of spring vacation there are great stirrings- and a spate of notices—as men prepare for Bermuda, Florida, Washington and other points south and west. Abetting this spirit are the Hanover shops, which have brought out their artificial palm trees and filled their windows with linen suits, white buck shoes, wash ties, and other tropical gear.

Spring vacation this year, lasts ten days, from March 29 through April 8, but next year it will be stretched to 15 days. There are those who' argue that the College ought to close down for three weeks or a month at this time of year, making up for it with an earlier opening and a shorter winter recess. The proposal has real merit, but if the College wants to develop moral fiber (and it does), how can you develop it better than by staying put and waiting for spring?
