A professor who has become Manager of Parks and Improvements for the City of Denver, Thomas P. Campbell '18 was the subject of an "Empire Profile" appearing in the Denver Post of February 24. Described as "affable, honest, smart," and credited with having the "saltiest tongue in City Hall," he has achieved outstanding headway in the parks program and is the only member remaining in the original cabinet appointed by Denver's Mayor Newton in 1947. Mr. Campbell has also served as Acting Mayor during the Mayor's absence from the city.
Receiving the B.S. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1921 and the Sc.D. from the Colorado School of Mines in Mr. Campbell woiked as metallurgist for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. in British Columbia; then returned to Denver in 1927 to begin an 11-year teaching career as Associate Professor of Metallurgy in the Colorado School of Mines. From 1941 until 1944 he served as president of the Wright Engineering Co. and has been president of the Campbell Investment Co. since 1930. His knowledge of finance, engineering and management have proved to be a valuable combination in his present position.
Mr. Campbell's father, the late RichardC. Campbell '86, was one of the first students to come to Dartmouth from as faraway as Denver. The third Campbell generation was represented by Richard in theClass of 1940 and Donald in 1945. Mr.Campbell himself has been prominent inDartmouth alumni affairs, having servedas a member of the Alumni Council from1943 until 1946, when he was president.In 1947 he was president of the GeneralAlumni Association.
Mr. Campbell is a member of a largenumber of civic organizations. He is thepresident of the Child Research Council,on the board of trustees of the Denver ArtMuseum, and the board of directors of theChamber of Commerce. He is the authorof numerous scientific papers for engineering journals and of a textbook, Principles of Hy drome tallurgy.
