DOC Reorganization
OCTOBER 1970

In a move to give coordinated direction to both the traditional and newly developing activities of the Dartmouth Outing Club, President Kemeny has named C. Allison Merrill, head coach of the Dartmouth ski team for 13 years, to the new position of Director of Outdoor Affairs for the College.

Merrill assumes overall supervision of the DOC at a time when it is adding a vigorous environmental program to its established programs of outdoor life and winter sports. During the past year the Club added a new Division of Environmental Studies to go along with such older divisions as Cabin and Trail, Winter Sports, and Bait and Bullet. He will also supervise the educational and recreational uses of certain College properties and relate these outdoor resources to the environmental studies program. He will continue to be Dartmouth’s varsity ski coach.

In his new position Merrill will be working closely with John Rand ’38, executive director of the DOC for many years, who will continue to supervise the traditional programs of wilderness living, recreational skiing, and other outdoor activities.

Merrill is a 1947 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he specialized in forestry and was captain of the ski team. He came to Dartmouth in 1956 as assistant ski coach under Walter Prager and became head coach the next year, leading Dartmouth to the NCAA champion- ship. His teams have been near the top in national rankings ever since. For the U. S. Olympic Ski Team he has been coach of the Nordic skiers for the games at Cortina in 1956, Innsbruck in 1964, and Grenoble in 1968.
