At the Boston Alumni Fund dinneron April 1, the John R. Mason Trophyfor the outstanding class agent of 1951among the youngest ten classes wasawarded to Addison L. Winship II '42.Following is his citation:

It is with great pleasure that the Alumni Fund Committee makes this second award of the John R. Mason Trophy to the most outstanding class agent of the youngest ten classes. The agents of recently graduated classes face an assignment unique both in terms of its difficulty and its opportunity. The problem is one of cultivation, the slow process of transforming undergraduates into faithful Alumni Fund contributors. The opportunity rests in the many years still ahead during which today's spadework can bring strength to the work of Dartmouth.

The class agent we honor at this time has grappled with these matters for the past four years. He has successfully overcome the difficulties and provided a strong foundation for the future. He has proven beyond any doubt his right to our esteem. During his first three years on the job this man increased the contributors in his class from 327 to 411. Last year he put the- emphasis on dollars and he finished second in his Green Derby with a total of $6,700, 98% of his assigned objective. He had produced more than twice what he obtained in his first year as agent in 1948. His results have had an important influence among his contemporaries, even among his arch-rivals of the classes of 1940 and 1941.

This is not the full extent of this man's service to the Alumni Fund. During the past two years he has served in addition as newsletter editor of his class. Last spring he was elected by the Class Agents Association to serve on the Alumni Council, a further opportunity to make his leadership effective.

The fact that this man is now a member of the very same Alumni Fund Committee which is responsible for making this award probably makes this the first such award that has not been unanimous or completely official. Be that as it may, a clear majority of the Committee has voted and takes great pride in presenting the 1951 Mason Trophy in the form of President-Emeritus Hopkins' This Our Purpose to one of our own, ADDISON L. WINSHIP 11, 1942.
