Coach Ellie Noyes should field a track team this spring that will be better than the aggregation wearing the green indoors. Reasons: there are several outstanding operatives in the outdoor weight events, who did not get a chance to perform their specialties in the confines of the cage. More about these later. The team will be led by Captain Pete McCreary who, as frequently noted in these columns, is in the great tradition of Dartmouth hurdlers, both in the highs and the lows. In the high jump, Dartmouth has another outstanding performer in Nels Ehinger, who tied for the indoor IC4A title this winter.
In the sprints, Dartmouth will be represented. by two fleet halfbacks, Dick. Collins and Dick Calkins, who also doubles in the broad jump. Dick Goodman makes up the third of the sprinters. In the middle distances, Sam Daniell and Stan Smiley are the veterans and they will be abetted by several eager sophomores, among them Ed Boody, Walt Clarkson, Dick Danforth, Dave McLaughlin, Mike Morrissey, and Tom Tyler. Smiley will also be the leading performer in the distances, where his cross-country training should give him the necessary stamina for the mile and the two-mile.
In the broad jump, Al Jackson, Dick Calkins, Dana Low, and Bob Simpson will be functioning. Ben Lawwill is a letterman in the pole vault, where he will be supported by sophomores Gary McKee and George Voss. In the weights, Dartmouth should have some outstanding performers, as noted, who will be able to place in almost any competition, up to and including the Heptagonals. Big George Rambour, the towering tackle, broke the college record in the discus three times last season, in his first year of varsity competition, and he should be able to harness his 245 pounds to the platter to even better advantage this spring. Halfback Al Reich is a javelin-thrower of note, and took third in the IC4A in that event last year. He should be able to win most any dual meet and place well up in stiffer competition. The squad is better rounded than it has been many times in the past, and Coach Noyes' charges should give a good account of themselves.
