The Class of 1931 can now claim two transportation presidents in one, with the promotion of E. Spencer Miller '31 to president of the Maine Central Railroad. Edward S. French '06, former president, becomes chairman of the board.
Miller is also president of the Maine Central Transportation Company, the railroad's highway subsidiary. Until recently first vice president of the Maine Central Railroad, and a director since 1949, he has been with this company since 1940, receiving rapid promotions. In 1943 he was made assistant general counsel and in 1946 general counsel. In 1947 he became vice president, and in 1949 first vice president of the Maine Central Railroad and Portland Terminal Company, waterfront subsidiary. He was elected president of the Maine Central Transportation Company in January 1952.
Well known in railroad and financial circles, Miller is a director of the National Bank of Commerce in Portland; a director of the New England Council; and an executive director of the Portland Chamber of Commerce. He served as secretary of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Maine from 1943 until 1946. After graduation from Dartmouth, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, he went on to Harvard Law School, receiving the LL.B. degree in 1934. Married, with three children, he makes his home in Portland.
