Edwin M. Stiles '13, Chief Engineer of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited since 1924, has recently retired from that post to become Consulting Engineer in the Engineering Division.
Following his graduation from College and one year at Thayer School where he received the degree of Civil Engineer in 1914, Mr. Stiles was associated with the United States Reclamation Service Survey, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. In 1917 he joined the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company as Chief Draftsman, later becoming Chief Engineer. As such he supervised all of Cominco's construction over the last 30 years. This work included major projects such as hydroelectric, chemical fertilizer and zinc plants, the Kootenay River power plant, the Waneta Power plant, and others.
Mr. Stiles is a member of The Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia and Alberta. He has written a number of technical papers, the most recent being "The Kootenay Lake Span," which he presented before the annual meeting of the Engineering Institute of Canada. He lives in Trail, B. C., Canada. He and Mrs. Stiles are the parents of two sons and two daughters.
