With 291 fathers of freshmen registered in Hanover over the weekend of February 13 arid 14, a new high was reached in the number of fathers who joined their sons in studying Othello in Freshman English, eating meals in Commons, and sleeping in dormitory rooms. The only difference in the schedules of fathers and sons, according to a report allegedly from the Tanzi Brothers and duly reported in The Dartmouth, was that the fathers bought a little beer.
After registration Friday afternoon, the fathers and the freshmen enjoyed the first of their Thayer Hall meals together and then went on to College Hall where Allen R. Foley '20, Professor of History, gave some slants on Vermont humor.
On Saturday morning there were classes to attend, and the afternoon brought a full schedule of freshman and varsity sport events. These were followed by a banquet in Thayer Hall, where the class president, Glendon E. French Jr. '56, of Park Ridge, III., was master of ceremonies. After an address by Prof. Stearns Morse, Dean of Freshmen, the '56 Glee Club performed several numbers and Forrest L. Fraser, father of "Woodsie" Fraser '56 of Glenview, Ill., presented the parental viewpoint. President Dickey, guest of honor, made the concluding address.
The fourth year for the Freshman Fathers' Weekend, this one was reported to be an unqualified success. Many of the fathers spoke of their congeniality with other freshman fathers, and of their enjoyment of a glimpse of college life as experienced by their sons. Among the record number of '56 fathers were some who had come all the way from California to attend the event.
MRS. DANIEL WEBSTER: This portrait of the statesman's first wife Grace, given to Baker by the W. L. Bryant Foundation through the Friends of the Library, was painted by Chester Harding in 1827, the year before her death. Pleased with the portrait, Webster himself later sat for the artist. This painting, too, is owned by Dartmouth.
