The Dartmouth College Library last month acquired its 700,000 th volume when Donald L. Stone, Professor of Government and Business Law, presented through the Friends of the Library, a Second Folio edition (1632) of Shakespeare. Professor Stone is also the donor of a Third Folio (1664) of Shakespeare and other valuable gifts from his own library.
"Quantity is not the only measure of a library," Harold G. Rugg '06, Associate Librarian, said in accepting the gift, "but it is an important indication of its stature." He said it is particularly appropriate for the college library to reach this important milestone in its development with the Shakespeare gift.
Baker's Shakespeare collection has received notable additions since the Treasure Room was first founded. In 1927 the late Matt B. Jones '94 presented the College with a Fourth Folio (1685). Last year Allerton C. Hickmott '17 of Hartford, Conn., through the Friends of the Library, gave Baker two complete plays from the First Folio (1623), Romeo and Juliet and Timonof Athens; and three complete plays from the Second Folio, King Lear,Othello, and Anthony and Cleopatra.
Baker Library, which was built in 1928 through a gift by the late George F. Baker, is now the largest undergraduate college library in the country and ranks 27th among the hundreds of university and college libraries in the United States.
While primarily an undergraduate library, Baker houses many important collections which attract scholars from all over the world. Among these are volumes on the Far East, the Polar and Arctic regions, Russia, Spanish America, and New Hampshire and the White Mountains. On the last two it contains the most comprehensive collections in the country.
It also contains many outstanding collections of authors, notably Rupert Brooke, Robert Burns, Erskine Caldwell, Stephen Crane, Robert Frost and H. L. Mencken.
