Well known as an art educator and art critic, E. M. Benson '27 has been appointed Dean of the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, one of the oldest and largest industrial art schools in the country. Mr. Benson for the past 17 years has been Chief of the Division of Education at the Museum. He is the author of the first monograph on the American artist John Marin, and a book, Problems of Portraiture. He is also a frequent contributor of articles to magazines and other publications.
Under Mr. Benson's direction, the Philadelphia Art Museum's work has been greatly expanded in the field of art education. He helped to establish and develop a department of circulating exhibitions, an art film library, art classes numbering more than 400 adults, and a color slide library said to be one of the largest in the world on art subjects. Mr. Benson will succeed Edward L. Warwick, former dean, on Tune 1.
After graduating from Dartmouth, Mr. Benson attended Columbia University. He is associate editor of the Magazine of Art.
