Under the will of Guy C. Richards of the Class of 1896, Dartmouth College has received a bequest of $178,395. Initial payment from the estate was made in 1952 and additional payments have been received from time to time thereafter culminating in a recent payment of $30,000.
President of his class and active in alumni affairs, Mr. Richards had provided that his entire estate be left to Dartmouth College to create an endowment fund bearing his name. In accordance with the donor's wishes the income of the Guy C. Richards Fund is being used to support awards to worthy students at Dartmouth in need of scholarship aid, with preference to lineal descendants of the graduate and non-graduate members of the Class of 1896. The Fund also provides an annual contribution to the Alumni Fund in Mr. Richards' name. The Richards' bequest raises the total gifts and bequests received from the members of the Class of 1896 to nearly a quarter of a million dollars.
Always a key figure at 1896 reunions, Mr. Richards practiced law in Salem, Mass., following his graduation and served as Beverly Solicitor from 1913 to 1916. In 1904 he married Mabel Hurd of Beverly, who was also a regular attendant at class gatherings until her death in 1949.
