Scholarship Gifts
March 1953

Dartmouth's scholarship funds have recently been increased by two large gifts to the College. Through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. George Welsh Jr. of Albany, N. Y., the sum of $25,000 has been given in memory of their son George Welsh III, a member of the Class of 1930. A gift of $37,000 by an anonymous alumnus has also been made for the purpose of endowing a four-year annual scholarship of $1,500, to be known as the Dartmouth- Westchester Scholarship.

The George Welsh III '30 Memorial Fund is to be held as an endowment, the income to be used to provide scholarship aid for students attending Dartmouth from Albany, Schenectady, Fulton, Saratoga, Warren or Greene counties in the State of New York, with preference going to residents of Albany County. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time next fall, the recipient to be chosen on the basis of scholastic ability, financial need and general high moral qualifications. Selection will be made by the Committee on Scholarships and Loans at Dartmouth. George Welsh III was killed in an automobile accident two years after his graduation, on November 14, 1932. At the time he was associated with his father in the lumber business in Albany.

The newly established Dartmouth-Westchester Scholarship will also be awarded for the first time next fall. The donor has specified that the recipient, an entering freshman, must need financial assistance and that, while the award may be made to a boy from any section of the United States, preference is to be shown to candidates living in Westchester County, New York. The criteria for the award are similar to those prescribed for Rhodes Scholarships.

Nomination for the award of this scholarship is to be made by a special committee of Dartmouth alumni appointed by the presidents of the Dartmouth Club of Westchester and the Dartmouth Club of New York. At the discretion of the committee, the scholarship may be divided and jointly awarded to two or more recipients of out standing qualifications.
