1953 Alumni Fund Opens Campaign for $600,000
April 1953

WITH a nest egg on hand of §88,OOO, the 1953 Alumni Fund this month gets rolling on its way toward a goal of $600,000. On March 20 as the ALUMNI MAGAZINE went to press, 810 alumni had already made their contributions. Kenneth M. Henderson '16, as chairman of the Fund Committee for the second year, heads up the Fund campaign, which begins officially on April 1.

The quota for 1952 was $500,000 —a goal which was topped by $111,500. Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, executive secretary of the Alumni Fund, predicts that the 1953 effort, with its sights increased by $1OO,OOO, will be a hard one, but, judging by the enthusiasm of the class agents, successful.

In the letter which Mr. Henderson sent to all the alumni at the start of the campaign, he brought out the desirability of having more funds available to the College for its student aid program. As he wrote, "The Fund can be an important source of new scholarship funds. This year, specifically, the Alumni Council has voted that if the 1953 campaign exceeds current operating needs, budgeted at $600,000, then such money should be used for additional scholarships."

With this urgent need of the College in mind, the class agents and their assistants are setting out with the hope that the 1953 campaign will go well beyond the goal that has been set. The College this year awarded approximately $475,000 in aid to students. Income from endowment funds covered only $158,000 of scholarship grants, and, although 512 students in all were helped, 291 who were admitted to the Class of 1956 were denied assistance because of the lack of funds.

Some 300 Alumni Fund workers attended kick-off dinners during the last week of March. Both President Dickey and Mr. Henderson spoke at the four dinners which were held in New York, Boston, Detroit and Chicago from March 25 until April 1. Without allowing themselves to feel undue optimism, the agents attending the dinners showed determination to make the annual alumni gift to the College the largest ever.

1953 Fund Agents

Following, by classes, are the names of the class agents, newsletter editors, and assistant agents who will conduct Dartmouth's 1953 Alumni Fund campaign. The head agent is listed first and the class newsletter editor is starred. Not all class organizations were complete at press time and the following list does not give all the names of some 1,200 men who will be working in the 1953 campaign.
