ARTHUR H. BASYE '26h, Professor of History, has been a member of the Faculty since 1908 and a full professor since 1925. He specializes in the history of England and also teaches a course on imperialism in the 19th and 20th centuries. Professor Basye is a graduate of the University of Kansas (1904) and took his Ph.D. at Yale. For some years he was chairman of the CEEB examiners in English and European history.

FOSTER E. GUYER '06, Professor of French, joined the Dartmouth Faculty in 1912 after teaching at Northwestern and Chicago In addition to writing numerous articles and reviews, he has edited several French classics and is the author of "A Short French Grammar for College Students (1940) and "The Main Stream of French Literature" (1932). The Medal of Honor was conferred upon Professor Guyer by the French Government in 1950.

HAROLD G. RUGG '06, Associate Librarian, has been with the College since graduation. Lecturer in art, he became full professor in 1947 and holds Dartmouth's honorary M.A. degree. He is an authority on ferns, Vermont history, rare books and Dartmouthiana. Professor Rugg has been secretary of Phi Beta Kappa at Dartmouth for 43 years and Literary Editor of the Alumni Magazine for 39 years.

MAURICE F. LONGHURST '24h, Professor of Music, came to Dartmouth in 1921, a well-known organist who had studied in London and Leipzig. Besides courses in theory and composition, his musical activities have included direction of the Handel Society symphony orchestra and chorus, the Band and Concert Series. As College organist he has been a familiar figure at Convocation, Commencement and other official events for many years.
