WELL, the big event has come and gone! Just under 200 men and women of the class of '43 have lived through (?) one of the most memorable times of their lives. I hope by now they have recovered reasonably well and have managed to get back to the dull, drab and dreary ways of everyday life. Our headquarters, the tent, was located along Tuck Drive and we were stationed at Hitchcock and South Mass.
Most of the gang arrived Friday afternoon or early evening and things really rolled from then on. It was a hot weekend - remember "Killer" (Kane)? - but we managed to survive it by spending most of the time under the cover of our tent.
You re all familiar with the program having seen it in the past issue of this MAGAZINE, and things progressed exactly as planned by our wonderful committee headed by "Damp" Dampier, Bob Atkinson and Kelley Coffin.
John Conn, ably assisted by Jim Wells, managed to dig up an "army duck" and we had a tour of the campus—midst lots of singing, whistling, wisecracks at passers-by; and a glass or two in everyone's hand. That, started the less formal part of the evening off in great style after the more formal President's reception at the "Hanover White House."
Beer was oozing not just spurting out of the many thousands of kegs that "Damp" had ordered for those who partake of the beverage and who doesn't? so, there was always something doing at the tent.
Other events that evening consisted of a dance at Commons (it was interesting to see how some of our old classmates and their wives looked in "civvies"), a play Mister Roberts at Webster and the usual "goings-on" at the tent.
The party broke up fairly early - 1:30 ish Friday night. Some of us went over to the younger class - 1917 - next tent where the party lasted 'till about 2:30.
We all arose bright and early Saturday, for breakfast, our class picture, and then the class meeting at 105 Dartmouth.
Ted Hopper gave us the story of our participation in the Alumni Fund Drive which is very poor indeed (but not Ted's fault). Jim Elleman reported on the Bill Remsen Memorial Scholarship Fund, presently around $15,000; Bud Hall on the 1943 Hopkins Memorial Building Fund, presently around $2,000 and waiting for the College to proceed with the plans so we can furnish a music room in honor of the '43's who gave their lives. We set the new class tax at $5 - you'll hear more about that later from our new Treasurer; had a brief Treasurer's report (the full report will appear in the next issue) and elected our new officers.
The Class Secretary's job has been split into two parts (now they do it!) - a Chairman of the Executive Committee, the class executive officer, and Secretary. The Chairman will be in charge of organizing functions throughout the year for football games, when the glee club's in town spring outings, etc., and the Secretary will write the '43 column, keep the class records, etc.
Kelley Coffin is the Chairman, Bill Baker, the Secretary. Look them up in your Aegis. Kelley is in New York now, but has just been given his own Agency by the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company up in Rutland, Vt., - a great break he'll have his own staff there and be close to Hanover, so will be in a fine position to really "whip" the class together.
Bill Baker is from Springfield, I11., and will be looking for you to send him news before he goes to press deadline September 5. His address is: William A. Baker Jr., 218 E. Jefferson St., Springfield, I11.
The Class Treasurer is Bob Craig Doctor, and hailing from Evanston, I11. Bud Silverstein is the new Class Agent. He was TedHooper's assistant and did a bang-up job. Let's really get him off to a good start next year.
The Executive Committee is: Jim Elleman (N. Y.), "Doc" Fielding (Boston), Bud Hall (Midwest), Charlie Cusack (Far West), StanPriddy (Southwest), and Elmer Stevens, former Secretary, honorary member. The Chairman has a right to add to this group at his discretion.
The Alumni Luncheon was served to several hundred people at the gym and then the annual Alumni Meeting took place.
The top event of the whole reunion was our outing at the Country Inn - ball game, women and Mike Diaz against Chuck Feeney. He had planned to bring a few of the Giants along, but they didn't show up, so he filled in with other '43's. Needless to say, the women won, in spite of Mike. Some of the boys weren't as agile as a few years ago, eh "Kos"?
Lobsters, clams, corn on the cob need I go further - anyhow, the dinner was excellent. and the beer flowed freely, as usual! "Doc" Fielding was supposed to entertain us Saturday night, but he was "having babies" - so we made our own entertainment, with the help of liquid refreshment. The gang was in pretty good voice.
Sunday we golfed, swam, slept, ate, saw the sites, and then "hit the road" for all parts of the country. Tired but happy, and already looking forward to our next reunion in 1959. Sounds a long way off, doesn't it? Well then, get some local ones going!
Sorry I couldn't mention more names, but my space is limited and they are all listed below.
