As is our custom, the July issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE has been delayed so that we might print a full report of the Commencement and Reunion Weekends.
Setting the 1953 Commencement apart from all the others in Dartmouth's long history was the presence of the President of the United States, who received the honorary LL.D. degree. As features this month we present a pictorial story of President Eisenhower's flying visit to the College (Pages 14-18) and also the text of his now-famous "Don't join the book-burners" address to the graduating class (Page 19). Accompanying the latter is a brief summary of the repercussions, still going on, and reprints of some editorial comment on the address.
Other Commencement coverage includes:
Commencement Review 9
President Dickey's Valedictory 13
The Seniors' Valedictory 21
The Commencement Address 23
Honorary Degree Citations 26
Fifty-Year Address 27
The Hanover Scene 31
Also printed this month is a short summary of The Reunion Weekend (Page 29) and part of the address delivered that weekend on behalf of the alumni by Robert Proctor '19 (Page 31). This issue does not carry the usual class notes; in their stead are reports from the thirteen classes that held official reunions. The group pictures accompanying the reports were all taken by David Pierce of Hanover.
The Cover
As a "dividend" to his honorary degree, President Eisenhower was presented with a senior cane by the graduating class. The cover picture by Adrian Bouchard shows Francis A. L'Esperance Jr., 1953 class president, making the presentation.
