FINANCIAL aid from the College is making it possible for a great many of these enrolled students to be at Dartmouth this fall. A record total of $552,000 in all forms of aid - scholarships, loans and Dartmouth Dining Association employment is going to 591 students, or 20.5% of the student body. This year's grand total is $33,000 higher than last year and the number of men on aid is greater by 22.
Figures released by Robert K. Hage '35, executive secretary of the Committee on Scholarships and Loans, show that of total aid, $430,500 is in the form of outright grants to 556 men. This is an average grant of $774, compared with $755 last year. These scholarships are going to men from all but nine states in the nation.
A large part of the increase in outright grants has come about through the secondyear extension of the Daniel Webster National Scholarship program and the award for the first time this year of six Alfred P. Sloan National Scholarships. There is also an increase of nearly $3,000 in grants to Hopkins Scholars, a program of aid to sons of Dartmouth men who lost their lives during World War II. Student loans this year will total $70,000 and earnings at the D.D.A. are listed at $52,000.
