March 1954

ONE of the vital administrative concerns at Dartmouth is the maintenance and enhancement of public good will toward the College. During the past two years a more tightly coordinated and carefully planned program has been in operation in Hanover, and a major factor in this development has been the stimulus and overall direction provided by the Committee on Public Relations. Francis Brown '25 of New York, chairman of the committee, has written this month s lead article, In the Public Eye (Page 16), to report on the work and policy decisions of his committee since its formation.

Another major article this month takes up the question of the extent to which government should be expected to meet the needs of modern society. Laurence I. Radway, Assistant Professor of Government, has written HowMuch Government? (Page 21), which was prepared originally as a Great Issues lecture.

The Cover

The D.A.M., which rarely has a cover girl, makes up for lost ground by having five of them this month. Adrian Bouchard was right on the job at the selection of the Carnival Queen and came up with this month's picture of Her Highness, Miss Mary Ingalls of Smith College, surrounded by four of her closest competitors: Karen Silverman of Briarclill, Joanne Flaherty of Smith, Pat Stepp of Mt. Holyoke, and Carole Young of Abbington Friends School.
