Need Some Cocobolo?

Self expression - from the humblest opinion to the proudest boast - is possible for those woodworkers who want to "build their own," if they are within buying distance of Espenet, a new kind of store owned and operated by two brothers who are Darmouth graduates. Arthur E. Carpenter Jr. '42 and Kenneth W. Carpenter '48 inaugurated their recent venture to meet the current "Do It Yourself" trend in San Francisco. A woodworker's dream, the store has hardwoods in every stage, from raw lumber to finished furniture, as well as bizarre and common varieties of woods. Most of the stock is imported, ranging from genisaro and teak to ebony and lignum vitae. Myrtle, magnolia, rosewood and beech are also available; and for connoisseurs, mulberry, madrone, buckthorn, cocobolo and mesquite. For those customers who do not want to start from scratch, the Carpenter stock includes surfaced boards for furniture, boxes, panels, wood and iron table legs, dowels, masonite, plywood, veneers and finishes.

Arthur Carpenter is a designer whose woodenware products have three times won Good Design Awards from the New York Museum of Modern Art. He has exhibited his work at the San Francisco, Detroit, and many other city art museums throughout the United States.

Espenet, opened in April, is doing a rushing business. The Carpenters have been amazed at the large number of professional people who are woodworkers by avocation.
