DORMITORY room rents at Dartmouth will be increased for the year 1954-55 by an average of about 10 per cent, it was announced last month by Mr. Meek.
The increase, the first in six years, was decided upon by the Board of Trustees at a meeting held April 23. Rates for each student will be increased between $10 and $30 per year, raising the average room rent from $210 to $230.
The figure represents an increase of only 1½ Per cent a student's expenditures for tuition, board and room, which will now average $1470 per year.
"In the period from the years just prior to World War II," Mr. Meek said, "increases in total dormitory costs have been held to 50 per cent while costs of labor and materials have risen 100 per cent. However, the rental per student, including the 1954-55 increase, will have risen only 20 per cent in the same period, mainly because the number of students housed in the same dormitory space has been increased. In 1952, moreover, students reduced their costs by taking care of their own rooms."
