ROBERT S. OELMAN '31 of Dayton, Ohio, was elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council for 1954-55 at its annual June meeting, held in Hanover from the 16th to the 18th, just prior to the reunion weekend.
Twenty-five Council members, eight new members joining the Council July 1, and 23 former members attended the sessions presided over by Kenneth M. Henderson '16 of Chicago, the outgoing president. In addition to the business brought up by its regular committees, the Alumni Council engaged in two extremely lively discussions, following talks on "Faculty Personnel and Objectives" by Dean Donald H. Morrison and on "Undergraduate Social Life" by Prof. Frank G. Ryder, chairman of the Commission on Social Life and Its Regulation.
Besides Mr. Oelman as president, the Council officers for the coming year are Edward Winsor '24 of Providence, vice president; Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover, secretary; and Sumner D. Kilmarx '22 of New York City and Howard J. Mullin '27 of St. Louis, executive committee members with the above three officers.
The Council elected two members-at-large for three-year terms: Julius A. Rippel '23 of Newark, N. J., and William G. Bates '33 of Hartford, Conn.; and for a similar term it reelected Mr. Kilmarx an alumni member of the Athletic Council. Mr. Kilmarx is senior alumni member and president of the DCAC. One other reelection by the Alumni Council was that of E. Spencer Miller '31 of Portland, Me., to the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn.
Committee chairmen for the coming year will be: Alumni Club Activities, Samuel H. Snow '40, Worcester, Mass.; Alumni Fund, Roger C. Wilde '21, Chicago; Bequest and Estate Planning, Edward Winsor '24, Providence, R. I.; Class Gifts to the College, Henry S. Embree '30, Chicago; Class Organization, Carleton G. McKinlay '37, Denver.
A major item of Council business last month was the taking of further steps to set policy and designate the directing personnel for the national enrollment program n which the Alumni Council is vitally interested. The Council's two standing committees on Admissions and Enrollment were consolidated into a single Committee on Enrollment and Admissions, with Donald C. McKinlay '37 of Denver as chairman. The committee, which will have policy responsibilities while a national enrollment committee directs operations, includes Edward T. Chamberlain '36, executive officer of the College, as secretary; H. Clifford Bean '16, Boston; F. Jordan McCarthy '26, Baltimore; Robert M. Edgar '28, Boston; William G. Bates '33, Hartford; John B. Faegre Jr. '33, Minneapolis; Robert L. Paterson '36, Rochester, N. Y.; Alfred W. Gordon Jr. '41, Omaha; William J. Holliday Jr. '43, Indianapolis; and Albert I. Dickerson '30, Hanover, director of admissions.
Early in October the Alumni Council's Committee on Enrollment and Admissions will meet in Hanover with the regional enrollment chairmen serving throughout the country. About twenty such chairmen are now directing regional activities and others will undoubtedly be known before the October conference.
Enrollment program leaders at the Alumni Council meeting were, left to right, AlbertI. Dickerson '30, director of admissions; Donald C. McKinlay '37, chairman of the Committee on Enrollment and Admissions; and Edward T. Chamberlain of committeesecretary.
