GIFTS and bequests to Dartmouth in the fiscal year ended June 30, 1955, were the largest received by the College since 1929 — a total of $2,267,279.

More than $1,000,000 was added to the endowment funds of the College. This was the third time since the end of World War II that over $1,000,000 has been added to endowment in a single fiscal year. Previous to World War II only four fiscal years had brought over $1,000,000 - 1926, 1929. 1930 and 1941.

New all-time highs were recorded in total gifts for current use and in the net total received from the Alumni Fund. The latter again provided over 30% of the grand total of gifts and bequests. In fact, two campaigns, the Alumni Fund campaign and the Memorial Fund campaign, are now annually nearing the $1,000,000 mark. The gross amount received by the Alumni Fund in 1955 was $774,859 while $161,407 was added to Memorial Funds, a total of $936,267.

There were five bequests of $10,000 or more:

Carl M. Owen '01 to establish the Carl M. Owen Scholarship Fund - $50,000.

Anton A. Raven, Honorary 1937, to establish the Anton A. Raven Fund - $38,000.

Alice L. Hodgkins to establish the Lemuel G. Hodgkins 1900 Scholarship Fund - $25,000.

Anton A. Raven Trust u/w Winifred S. Raven to establish the Winifred S. Raven Fund - $17,023.

Dorothy Cleaveland to establish the Dorothy Cleaveland Memorial Scholarship Fund - $10,000.

The College received a total of $61,368 as income from trusts in the hands of others.

Of the sixteen largest gifts from individuals twelve came from alumni; one from an alumnus, his wife and his father; and one from a parent with two Dartmouth sons.

Of the eighteen largest gifts from individuals fifteen came from alumni and one from a parent with two Dartmouth sons:

Charles Gilman, to establish the Gilman '42-'52 Fund — $25,000.

Louis E. Leverone '04, to establish the Louis E. Leverone Fund in support of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation - $25,000.

Orvil W. Smith '03, to be added to the Orvil W. Smith Fund - $20,906.

Anonymous Alumnus, to be added to Fund #5 - $17,787.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Kettering II '53 and Eugene W. Kettering, to be added to the Kettering Scholarship Fund - $15,000.

John C. Sterling '11 and Katherine C. Sterling, to establish the John C. and Katherine C. Sterling Daniel Webster Scholarship Fund - $15,000.

Kent H. Smith '15, to be added to the Kent H. Smith Fund - $13,401.

Anonymous Alumnus, to be added to the 1923 Memorial Fund - $11,483.

J. Widman Bertch '23, to establish the J. Widman Bertch Scholarship Fund — 511,175.

Huntley N. Spaulding, Honorary 1927, to establish the Huntley N. Spaulding Daniel Webster Scholarship Fund - $10,000.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Cohen '03, to be added to the Arthur J. Cohen Jr. 1937 Memorial Scholarship Fund - $9,987.

Philip H. Chase '07 and Frederick Chase '05, to establish the Professor Stephen Chase, Sarah T. Goodwin, his wife; Treasurer Frederick Chase, Mary F. Pomeroy, his wife. Memorial - $9,234.

Among the larger grants from foundations were the following:

Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Inc., for Scholarships and for Tuck School Research - $67,340.

Fund for the Advancement of Education for the Internship Program - $35,000. Carnegie Corporation of New York for Research

in Civil-Military Relations and for the Russian Studies Program - $32,500.

Carnegie Foundation for Retiring Allowances - $31,498.

National Science Foundation for research projects in Engineering, Physics, Geology and Mathematics - $30,900.

The Rockefeller Foundation for research projects - 127,383.

Corporate gifts to the College were at a new all-time high. A total of $76,380 came in the form of corporation gifts.
