The frustrating near-misses of the first four games were wiped out by the Big Green eleven when it defeated favored Harvard, 14 to 9, in the Diamond Jubilee game in Hanover on October 22. Dartmouth was "up" for this contest, with hard running and rugged defensive play. Bob Blackman's first victory as Dartmouth coach was a big one and his players were as ecstatic as the capacity crowd.

Bill Beagle, quarterback passing ace, had a hand in all 14 points, tossing 23 yards to Monte Pascoe for the first score, plunging over himself for the second, and kicking both points after. Dartmouth's previously anemic running attack was good for 169 yards to Harvard's 137, and with Beagle in good form, the Indians completed eight of eleven passes for 71 yards. Improved defense held the Crimson to three pass completions out of eighteen tries. Dartmouth led 7-2 at the half, trailed 9-7 in the third period, but dominated the final quarter when the winning touchdown was scored.

The day before the varsity game, the Dartmouth freshmen unveiled some encouraging backfield strength in defeating the Harvard '59s by a 20-0 score.
