The Dartmouth Club of South Florida began a very active spring-summer-fall season with the March meeting at which Club officers for the 195.5-56 year were elected. Ed Hodgson '42 was elected president for an unprecedented second term. Bert Cabbie '37 and Dan Qidlty '38 were elected vice presidents. Dick Maloy '49 was elected secretary-treasurer for a third term.
On the afternoon of August 20, seventeen members and their families and friends frolicked on Key Biscayne. In other words, we had an old-fashioned picnic, complete with hamburgers, cold cuts and BEER. The affair is best described by quoting these words penned by Dan Quilty:
"Now to the events so ably arranged by BertCabbie. The assorted gathering of members, wives, children and, yes, grandchildren, at the Crandon Park Cabanas exhibited a deadly seriousness to anyone not acquainted with Dartmouth. They were serious in their drinking and in their eating - the two volunteer dispensers of beverages (Lewis and Hart) and the Cabana boys who served dinner were pushed to the limit to keep the gang satisfied. Satisfied they were, however, to the point that the suggestion was made and informally voted upon, to stage a repeat performance some time in October. We were happy to welcome the Mateers to South Florida. (They gave up their first day in their new Dania home to attend.)"
On September 6, we feted our six South Florida boys who are entering the Dartmouth Class of 1959, at a luncheon held in the Biscayne Room of the McAllister Hotel. On hand to welcome the lads into the Dartmouth family were several upperclassmen as well as alumni. Dave Hillman '57, Jim Orovitz '58 and Ernie Drosdick '58 (the latter delivering an impromptu talk) answered many questions put to them by freshmen and alumni alike. Allan Gottschaldt '18 delivered an address to the freshmen, in which he outlined the glories of the College's past, present and future. Alumni Council member Chuck Garnsey '20 exhibited 35-mm. slides which he compiled on his recent trip to Hanover. Lloyd A. Towle, father of entering freshman, John Towle, praised the Club and its keen interest in securing applicants for Dartmouth. His words were much appreciated by the Club in general, and in particular by Al Bisson, his committee on enrollment, and by Chuck Garnsey, who have devoted so much time to enrollment.
In addition to a large attendance of regular members we were glad to see newcomer JoeReagan '46 and Roscoe Philbrick '37, who has recently become an active member once again.
At the beach picnic given by the Dartmouth Club of Southern Florida, on August 20, members, wives, children and guests enjoyed the sunshine at Crandon Park Cabanas.
