Who would like to attend another "reunion" in June? A couple of weeks ago (February 18) I had a visit with Henry Van Dyne and he and Roy Lewis had been in communication regarding the possibility of securing accommodations either at the Orford Inn or at the New Chieftain Motel, just north of the golf course. Because probably most of these accommodations are booked up for earlier dates in June, we would have to make it the weekend of June 25 or put it over into July. The Orford Inn sounds good - and we all know how close to Hanover Orford is. They have accommodations for 24, with private baths, and can obtain more from surrounding places if we were to need them. Their rates are $3 and $4 per person and, most important, they have a hotel liquor license and their dinners are reasonable. The New Chieftain Motel is also run by a Dartmouth alumnus, where they have accommodations for 25 or so, with rates somewhat higher. As soon as. I receive definite dope, I will send out a communication to the Class to ascertain who, and how many, might be interested.
When I had lunch and the visit with Henry Van Dyne, he had just returned from a five-weeks' Caribbean trip. While in Puerto Rico he journeyed to see Dutch Waterbury and had what apparently was a wonderful visit with him. Dutch took him through the sugar mills and sugar plantation that Dutch runs and, as Henry said, Dutch is, in addition, a really big shot now being engaged, after being drafted for the job, in reorganizing railroads in Puerto Rico. Henry must have had a wonderful trip, with extensive visits to Cuba and practically all of the other islands in the Caribbean.
Judge Harry Trapp was married in January, at his home in Laconia, N. H., to Mrs. Lesleigh R. Paine. The couple was attended by Mrs. Allan E. Paine, daughter-in-law of the bride and Dr. Harry E. Trapp Jr., son of the bridegroom. For many years Harry has been Justice of the Laconia Municipal Court and Clerk of the County Superior Court. Some years ago his bride served as his Superior Court secretary. Congratulations and best wishes of the Class are extended to Harry in his new happiness, because it will be remembered that his last-minute reason for his absence from our 1952 reunion was the death of his first wife, although few knew it at the time.
Ben Adams contributes a newspaper clipping showing a picture of Guy Swenson being installed with other new officers as the Junior Warden of St. Paul's Church, Concord, N. H.
And speaking of newspaper clippings, one of the best that I have received in a long time is a December issue of the Portland (Maine) Independent Republican showing, first, pictures of Bill Shapleigh as a 13-year-old Nipper in his home town of Melrose, Mass., and then as he is today, as executive secretary of the Main Truck Owners Association, a post he has held since 1946. Bill really has had quite a career. Among other things, he has worked in the engineering departments of the Main Central and Canadian Pacific Railroads, as a master engineer in France with the AEF in World War I, as a valuation engineer in Chicago for utility firms, for a concern manufacturing gas in Canada, and as valuation engineer in Portland for the Cumberland County Power & Light Company. He still likes traveling better than any other hobby, and fondly recalls a number of months at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, when the Army sent him to school there. He is active in community affairs and a former president of the Dartmouth Club of Maine.
My valued correspondent, Emma Pettingell, sends me a clipping announcing the engagement of Sally Jane Gibbs, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Ruel Gibbs of Wareham, Mass., to Mr. George Sachs USA. Sally is a graduate of Abbot Academy and Wellesley College. Mr. Sachs studied at St. George's School in Europe, Perkiomen Preparatory School in Pennsylvania, Emory University and Columbia University. He is now stationed at Fort Dix, N. J.
Harry Wanner was recently elected chairman of the board of governors of the Goose Creek Country Club at his home town, Leesburg, Va.
