In recognition of his 1954 Alumni Fund achievements, which rated him as the best class agent 25 years out of college, William H. Perry '21 received the James B. Reynolds Trophy at the Boston Fund dinner, March 29, with the following citation:
The James B. Reynolds Trophy is awarded each year to the head agent of a class more than 25 years out of college in appreciation and recognition of outstanding service to the Alumni Fund and Dartmouth College. For the 1954 campaign the Fund Committee has chosen an alumnus who has served as a head agent for only one year.
The Committee deliberated at some length in making this selection. Such honor is seldom bestowed on the strength of a single campaign. Furthermore, when a man takes on a class that has won six consecutive Green Derby victories and promptly drops that famed class back to third place, his courage may be respected but his claim to this sort of praise will surely be challenged. Only when it is further understood that while leading his class from first to third, this agent chalked up the finest performance in every respect that this class has ever achieved is all question swept away. And that is the record that commands our attention at this time.
The misfortune of advancing from Group III to Group II was the only barrier that kept this extraordinary class from its seventh straight Green Derby triumph. In all respects the superiority of the 1954 results is clear-cut. During this head agent's initial effort, 306 members of the class participated, 22 more than in 1953, and the first time ever oyer 300. This represented 110% participation, highest ever. At the same time an average gift of $71.80 produced a total of $21,970, some $2,200 larger than the previous year, and again the best the class had ever done.
So it's congratulations and thanks to the one who fashioned the best year ever for one of the Alumni Fund's most outstanding classes. This Louis Orr etching cannot begin to express our admiration of WILLIAM H. PERRY of the Class of 1921.
