The award for the Dartmouth ClassSecretary of 1955 was presented to ScottC. Olin '50 by Sidney C. Hayward '26,Secretary of the College, who in addition to a citation, read a telegram sentto the mother of the Secretary of theClass of '50. Following are the citationand telegram:
Fortunately Dartmouth has its full measure of elder statesmen who serve decade after decade in her cause. In great measure they are her strength. However, one of the most exciting aspects of work for Dartmouth - as an alumnus or as a College officer - is to see constant evidence of leadership in Dartmouth affairs being exerted by men in the younger classes; because we know that the work done in the first few years after graduation is the foundation for the next half-century of class activity.
Scott C. Olin, Secretary of the Class of 1950, stands forth as one of the most promising reassurances of Dartmouth's continuing strength. Scott's lively, well-written column in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE has, through its fine news coverage and interesting format, served as a focal point for a class that even now shows signs of becoming one of the greatest. Scott is now hard at work setting up a regional class organization. Scott is on the move and his class and his College applaud the effectiveness of his effort.
And now, we make history! Scott Olin, you are the youngest man in the history of the College to receive this award as Dartmouth Class Secretary of the Year.
The message sent by wire to Mrs.Oscar C. Olin of Hartsdale, N. Y., andsigned by Mr. Hayward was as follows:
This evening at Dartmouth your son is being honored as the Class Secretary of the Year. We who work in Hanover know that Dartmouth ladies also frequently give outstanding service to the College. We know that you served the Class of 1950 for several years when Scott was in the Navy and that never once did a class member fail to receive a birthday card from the Secretary, although he was far away at sea. All of us thank you and hope you will accept herewith the title of Assistant of the Year to the Dartmouth Secretary of the Year.
SCOTT C. OLIN '50
