The big day for the Indian heavyweights, directed by Coach Peter Gardner, came at last with the decisive defeat of Wisconsin and M.I.T. for the coveted Cochrane Cup. The Big Green oarsmen captured the lead right after the gun sounded on M.I.T.'s Charles River course, and stayed there, holding off a powerful sprint by the Big Ten Champion Badgers. The victory brought Dartmouth into the forefront of Eastern crew ranks. The time was 6:30.3 against a stiff headwind. The frosh heavies also continued to impress, with back-to-back victories, first against M.I.T. and Syracuse, and finally against Wisconsin and the young Technicians.
This past winter the Big Green oarsmen undertook a strenuous series of workouts in preparation for the spring season, and it is obvious that their hard work is paying dividends. In the Easterns, at Worcester, Dartmouth raced to an eighth place finish, the highest ever for an Indian boat. Next hurdle are the IRAs, June 15, in Syracuse, where the top Eastern crews meet head on with the leading Western contenders.
