Track coach Ellie Noyes and assistant Bill Joyner had figured this to be only an average year with a fair nucleus of returning veterans and a promising crop of sophomores. But injuries have hit hard among the veterans and the Indians have dropped their first two meets of the season to Boston University and Cornell.
The injury roster is long - Captain Dick Schad out for the first two meets with a leg injury, veteran middle-distance runner Jim Wooster out with a badly sprained ankle, and sprinters Jim Mueller and Dave Bell both sidelined with leg injuries suffered last fall in football.
A lack of strength in the field events also was noticeable in the first meet against Boston University which Dartmouth lost 60 1/2 to 43 1/2. B.U. swept the first two places in the weight toss, shot put and broad jump before Dartmouth could get going. Senior John Diggs soared 12'6" to win the pole vault, with Bob Nelson placing third. Veteran Mike Kistler came from behind to win the mile race and Phil Drescher, another letterman, won the high jump for the Big Green, while Tom Lennox took second place in the mile. The sophomore talent began to show as Bob Colyer, in his first varsity meet, won the 1000-yard run and Ed Berkowitz ran well to win his first varsity two-mile race. Sophomores Jerry Boyle and Dave Sloper placed second in the 600-yard run and the 100-yard dash, respectively. But B.U.'s lead in the field events, coupled with a sweep of the relays, gave them the meet.
Against a strong Cornell team, the Indians put up a surprising show of team strength to tie the meet at 36-all after eight events. The Big Red, however, put on a late surge to win 27 of the final 36 points and go off with a 62-47 victory. Pete Pullen won the 35-pound weight toss, Phil Drescher tied for first place in the high jump, and Roger Carlin won the 45- yard high hurdles for Dartmouth's best showings. Cornell swept most of the distance events,-including the two-mile relay, to pull away to the winning lead.
Co-Captains of the Dartmouth ski team this winter are Bill Smith '58 (left) of Pittsfield, Mass., and Dave Harwood '58 of Manchester Center, Vt. Smith is a four-event man and Harwood specializes in the downhill and slalom events.
