Big Green skiers continued their domination of Eastern skiing by winning the Middlebury Winter Carnival meet by 558.01 points to 557.6 for Middlebury and 548.7 for the University of New Hampshire. This late February meet featured the return of Dartmouth ace Chick Igaya, fresh from Olympic competition. Igaya promptly won the downhill race and was going strong in the slalom when he somersaulted through a gate and was later disqualified when officials claimed that one ski did not go through the gate. However, teammate Egil Stigum took first in the slalom, then went on to place seventh in the downhill and fifth in the jump which, combined with Igaya's fifth place in the jump and John Ceely's third in the cross-country race, gave the Big Green their third winter carnival victory of the season.
Although rated best in the East, Coach Walt Prager's skiers will find rougher going when they wind up the season on March 24-25 at the N.C.A.A. Championship meet in Winter Park, Colorado. The top teams from all sections of the nation compete in this meet, and the Indians are expected to find potent opposition from the University of Denver, Washington University and others.
