For those who may wish to register complaints, let it be known that it is McFarland rather than Bowlen who is writing the notes for this particular issue of the MAGAZINE. It appears that one of the emoluments of having been Secretary of this great Class is the privilege of writing these notes when the duly elected and presently acting Secretary is out of the country.
It was late February when I learned that it would be "necessary" for Dick Bowlen to make a business trip to England, with a projected stay of four or five weeks. (It is always amusing to hear the word "necessary" applied to such an all-expense-paid expedition such as this, when, as a matter of fact, the opportunity of taking a respite from the long New England winter - and most especially to England seem anything but a duty.) We - would understand that Dick, who intends to fly back, managed by very careful planning to take his ski boots and ski pants with him so that he might "just possibly" take a long English weekend for some skiing in either Switzerland or Austria. (We will be disappointed in him if he does not do so.) Dick's trip over was via the Queen Mary, and his particular passage was the one which met with the terrific Atlantic storms during the course of which many people were injured and large quantities of the "Mary's" china and glassware were broken by reason of the terrific tossing around on the high seas. Word came from Dick, however, that he thoroughly enjoyed the trip and was not the least bit seasick. These Vermonters are made of stern stuff!
Those of you who were viewing the Omnibus TV program on the evening of March 11 had the privilege of seeing Harry Dunning who appeared, of course, on behalf of Scott Paper Company and was interested in seeking recruits from colleges and technical school graduates...."Snub" Poehler, who is coordinator of elementary education in the Lexington, Mass., public schools, was recently named head councilor of the Chesterbrook School Summer Day Camp in Waltham, Mass We understand that Nelson Rockefeller planned to spend the Easter holidays at his farm in Venezuela with his sons, Steven and Michael. ... Dorothy and Rollie Booma recently an- nounced the engagement of their daughter, Dorothy Lee, to 2nd Lt. Ferdinand L. Carangelo USMC, a graduate of Colgate in the class of 1955, who is now stationed at Quantico, Va. Dorothy Lee graduated in 1953 from Colby Junior College and in 1955 from the Nursery Training School of Boston and received her degree from Tufts University. A summer wedding is planned.
Notwithstanding that the event was scheduled for the same evening that President Eisenhower appeared on TV, the Midwinter Dinner of the Class of 1930 in the New-York-New Jersey area was held at the Dartmouth Club on February 29 with an enthusiastic group of about 25 members being present. Guest speaker was Col. Larry Lougee '29, who gave an interesting resume of the Army's position regarding the Prisoner-of-War question. Chairman Charlie McDonough announced that the spring dinner of the New York-New Jersey 1930 group would be held some time during the middle of May, and that the exact time would be announced later.
Although it will be reported more fully elsewhere, it is important to record in the notes for this column that at the Annual Awards Dinner of the Dartmouth Club of New York held on April 24, Pat Weaver was one of the three Dartmouth Alumni who received an award for distinguished service to society and to business. The Class of 1930 is and always has been proud of Pat, and it is welcome to see this additional recognition being given to him.
Members of 1930 continue to devote a great deal of their time pro bono publico. Cliff Vogt is again heading the Western Reserve University Medical School Alumni Fund drive this year, and it is understood that the primary purpose of the Fund is for student loans.... Carll Buhler was named co-chairman of the Commerce and Industry Division of the 1956 Nassau Red Cross Fund campaign. Carll is also a vestryman at All Saints Episcopal Church, Great Neck, N.Y., and is a past president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Long Island....Jack Wooster acted as chairman of the house-to-house committee of the Montclair Red Cross campaign, which involved supervision of almost 1,300 men and women who were active as solicitors. Jack has previously been active in both Red Cross and Community Chest work in Montclair and is an elder of the Central Presbyterian Church.
