The Capital Gifts Campaign, now opening, finds 1925 well represented among those who have undertaken to serve the College in this vital enterprise. Included in this goodly company are: Trustee, Jock Brace; National Steering Committee, Tom Gedge, Pete Kelsey, and Stan Smith, with Tom and Pete serving as regional chairmen for the Southern and Pacific Coast states respectively, two of eleven such chairmanships; Office of Development, Ford Whelden, who is Executive Secretary for Bequest and Estate Planning; and 58 members of the Sponsoring Committee who stand ready to accept such individual assignments as may come their way. Such participation is no accident; it reflects once more 1925's recognition of its responsibility for leadership in alumni affairs. The scrolls of history are unrolling more rapidly than ever. If they are to be comprehended if civilization as we know it is not to collapse through our sheer inability to understand and manage the energies that man has generated, spiritual no less than physical — we must arm ourselves with men of knowledge and insight. Events at home and abroad daily demonstrate the perils and tragedies of ignorance and intellectual immaturity. Against the enemy within and the enemy without there is no real defense but education. The universities and colleges of the nation must show the way, and it is Dartmouth's destiny, as she rounds out her second century, to be a leader among undergraduate liberal arts colleges. In such an undertaking, those to whom Dartmouth has given much must be proud and eager to share.
